Dread, how about a modern NT? I mean 1980s when I say modern... ;D

Sounds good to me. Not as mind-twisting as Harpoon though, please!

Thought about it. Haven't been struck with any ideas off hand though. So it's on my "think more about it and come back to it later" pile.

Actually thinking about a new sci-fi game, but I wonder if it could be ported to a modern navy game pretty easily.

Sci Fi navy? Or a different take on space combat?

Space combat. . . but could work for modern navy too I bet.
Nothing beyond the "wouldn't it be cool if. . ." stage though.

It would be cool if it was compatible with Battleship Row / Bitter Rivals...

LOL the problem is modern navy isn't about formations and maneuvering to open broadsides. It's about stand-off attacks and defensive systems.

And air. Lots and lots of air.

Which is why I feel that a sci fi game and a modern navy game could share a core ruleset.

I'd be first in line if you did decide to bring it out Harry! And besides, I do have a few 1/6000th Soviet and US models (apart from the hundreds of WWII ships) that need a rule set - they're not just for turning up in a WWII game to scare the **** out of my opponent! ;D

Cold war Naval battles, that would be awesome

So two years out, where might this be?

Honestly, it's pretty low priority for me. I've got a couple other projects I'm trying to finish up. After that I have some ideas about sci-fi ground combat I might pursue. Or a giant fleet-level battles system.
With respect to cold-war, I'd have to do a lot of research. I feel like I don't have a good understanding of more than just the basics.
The understanding I do have makes me wonder if this would make for a very fun game though. I don't see there being a lot of tactical decision making, or maybe I'm just missing something.

I get it. I've looked around for rules and with all the air, it could be a game you played in two different rooms, think Harpoon. I have been looking at some FAC rules lately, they could be fun.

There are a few alternative modern naval rules to Harpoon and Shipwreck. I don't think I've seen any naval rules for the future though, and I still think that a scifi naval rules set would be interesting at some stage. Various possibilities. Maybe it is all undersea warfare. Maybe all air is by drone. Maybe massive climate change has affected the whole air-surface-submarine balance and things are very different from today.

Sci fi rules would be easier, as I don't have to research 80's weapon systems as much.
Does anyone make any good sub miniatures though? lol

Perhaps a decent rules set would spark a miniatures range. Dunno. Old Crow make a mini sub and a small boomer type. I just acquired an old metal miniature of Stingray and a Terror Fish, though they are a pretty niche kind of submarine. I've been looking at some of the War Rocket and old SW Starship Battles stuff to supplement Stingray.
However it would be more fun to have a less kid's TV future naval wars game. Maybe akin to the Dragon in the Sea novel by Frank Herbert

Wouldn't a modern naval game be so dominated by air and stand off attacks trying to penetrate the defences of essentially static targets as to not really be a playable miniatures game at all? Other than very small scale engagements I mean.
A single (for example) Typhoon/Eurofighter has the capability to tear apart any capital ship afloat if it can penetrate the defence screen, and is going to be moving twenty (or more) times faster than its target. I'm not sure there's any SF equivalent of that model.
So saying, there is definitely space in the world for a playable version of Harpoon, and maybe this could be it?
