I've been considering a faction for my home brew universe that uses short range expendable drones instead of fighters and thought I'd post my ideas because this board needs a wake up.
Drones can not operate beyond 3 hexes from their mother ship, during fighter movement they may adjust their relative position by up to 3 hexes and then they maintain that relative position during ship movement. If their final hex is already occupied they are bumped according to the normal rules, if this moves them outside their 3 hex range they are removed as destroyed.
Drones have a weak weapons fit and use D6 for both anti-fighter and anti-ship combat.
I'm considering allowing drones a kamikaze option which will give them a single use D10 anti-ship attack.
Without the kamikaze option I would guess a mass of 8, or 9 with the ramming attack.
What do people think?

I like the idea of drones. What if you gave a ship class the ability to operate them at a bit longer range, much like a carrier and it's fighters? You could also up-drone that class over the everyday amount other classes could have. This might be a nice destroyer class that operartes ahead of the fleet as a picket ship.

That's a great idea Larry, it fits particularly well with the background (Sizest AI ships that don't believe any sentient should be smaller than a destroyer) the small ships are all subservient to the larger and this is just a the sort of role a DD would take on in hopes of earning the credit needed for an upgrade to a bigger hull.
