Had a couple friends over last night and tried out ship designs for my GenCon scenario where a Colonial Fleet base is being attacked by unknown forces that originated in a galaxy far, far away.
I've considered this scenario a kind of Holy Grail for Colonial Battlefleet. Essentially - the ability to take a no shields missile and kinetic tech based setting against a traditional heavy shields and beam weapons setting and have it work out to be a fun challenging game.
I have to say it was a big success! Had one Imperator and two Victory class star destroyers against one Mercury and one Acropolis class battlestars.
Tie fighters and tie bombers used the standard interceptor and strike fighter profiles. The Colonials got the advantage of the multi-role Mk VII vipers with support from Raptors.
Fighter combat was pretty much a one-sided slaughter in favor of the Colonials. Colonial fighter tech emphasiszes quality over quantity, so when not outnumbered by hordes of cylon raiders, the quality of the Colonial air wings with Raptor support against a comparable number of base-line fighters delivered a stunning fighter victory in their favor.
This was fortunate because the super-heavy turbo lasers on the ISDs, while not ideal as armor penetration weapons, didn't have to chew through any shields before they started eating into the hull. Meanwhile, the Colonial battlestars - which emphasize maximum armor penetration with little in the way of shield-stripping ability, were hard pressed to crack the shields on the ISDs. The Colonial vipers came in handy doing shield-attrition to allow more rail gun hits to sneak through.
Outcome was decidedly in favor of the Imperials. Both the Victory class ISDs were destroyed, but the Imperator took only minor damage in exchange for the loss of both Colonial Battlestars.
I think giving the Defender role to the Imperator was just a little too much to handle for the Colonials due to it's phenomenal shield regeneration. The ISDs had loaded up on as many super-heavy TLs as they could cram into the hulls, and neglected fighter defenses - as a result they had no effective counter to the horders of Colonial Vipers left over after the tie fighter squadrons were slaughtered. As intended, the effect of a close range volley of forward firepower from an Imperator on a Colonial Battlestar was horrifying.
For next time, the SH-TLs will get trimmed back a little to make room for more tie fighters, and fighter defense in the form of Gatling Laser clusters. I don't think flak batteries are really a good fit for ISD AA work. Thoughts?
