Just purchased battleship row and bitter rivals. This we be our first adventure into miniature war gaming. Out of the scenarios from the books which would be good to start out with? Also, we were wondering if there are other scenarios out there, ones that dont require a lot of ships as we build up our fleets.

Hi native, welcome to the boards! It can get a little quiet on here at times - sorry that you haven't had a response so far! In my opinion, you can't go far wrong with the River Plate and Denmark Strait scenarios - you can play the game without getting bogged down with too many ships, and then slowly graduate to more complex scenarios as you get more familiar with the rules... Another option is to use the points system to get (relatively) equal sides, then go head to head... Or you could try what toaster has posted here... steeldreadnought.proboards.com/thread/1071By the way, where do you call home? Good luck with the game! Enjoy!

If nothing else, just use the pointscsystem for a few ships and do battle. It does get really slow on here latelt. Not sure why. Might nothing new has come out in while, poeple have become bored, who knows why. But welcome to the boards and please feel free to ask. I know a few of use check ever couple of dayscat least. The river plate works best, also, just proxy ships also just to getvthe feel of the game. Check out the nav con tread in the head section to give yoi an idea of a naval gaming con also. The other thing is what scale of minis do you want to use? The rules can handel from 1/1250 to 1/6000. I myself am a fan of a weird 1/1000 turn of the centry ships and scale put out by huston minis.

Welcome to the boards! Yes, a little slow here. . . but generally you'll get a response in a day or so.
It's actually not unique to this board. Seems like in the last couple years most internet gaming forums have slowed down compared to what they used to be like. Not sure what's up with that.

Thanks for the replies. Looking forward to playing. Looking at GHQ for miniatures. Is there any links for painting guides and colors of ships.

You can check the gallery board and see if that gives you any ideas. Otherwise, there are actually historical painting guides. . . but I think most people tend to just go for what looks good.

Just paint how you want. I know I went pretty much lots of silver for my navys, nothing like shining like mad in the britecsunlight while doing battle. But yes, theres is lots of ideas in the minis section for painthing ideas, if not just doing some looking for what history has done......then again, if you a hot pink fleet of ships, who is going to stop you.

Welcome to the forum, Native. I would agree the the River Plate or Denmark Strait are good battles to start with - only 4 ships in each one. I like GHQ ships as well. They're a little expensive, but they have great detail and I don't think you'll be sorry if you go that route. As for painting, here is a link to a good site to research US ships and their various color schemes at different time during the war: www.shipcamouflage.com/camouflage_database.htmI don't have sites for other nations, but usually a Google search of the name of the ship you are interested in will provide some photos (unfortunately usually black and white!). I try to go with historical accuracy whenever possible.

Yes, welcome. The two everyone is mentioning are good ones to start with. I would also recommend, after you're hooked, to try the WWI system. It works well with more balanced games IMO.

What size table could we get away with using ghqs models?

My ideal game table would be 1,80x1,20 mts.
