Hey guys, thanks for the responses. It all makes sense. I'm going to work on basically a set of house rules and a standard scenario for fun/semi-competitive play. I'll post them when they are in decent enough shape. I'm sure it will make the "historical" side of everyone cringe a little.
For smoke I'm thinking right now that we will have some sort of area of affect marker (6" radius) - ships inside are harder to hit and have their own shooting penalties against other targets. LOS cannot be drawn complete through the smoke area. Advanced radar of course will let you ignore the penalties and also allow you to shoot completely through (but with a penalty). I like the area idea as it prevents the destroyer that laid the smoke from completely hiding (the turn it goes down), as they will place the marker at the mid point of their movement. The penalties to hit give the advantage to the person with advanced radar, but not an overwhelming one. Anyway, still have to try it out.
