So I while ago I got the idea for a historical naval game where you can design and build your own ships. Unfortunately, I already have Naval Thunder as my historical game, and I'm pretty happy with it. I don't want to dilute that brand at all.
So I was thinking I'd take the mechanics and create a "flying battleship" game in the vein of Aeronef or Leviathans. More detailed than Aeronef (although I will try to keep it simpler than NT), and less arcane than Leviathans.
I've had the notes about 90% complete on my hard drive for months, but everything else has seemed to get in the way so it will be (hopefully) 2011 before this ever saw the light of day.
Just curious as to what people's thoughts were on the topic. Things they would like to see/not like to see.

We liked and played Aeronef, but as you said, too simple. We have not jumped at the others as we have too many games and not enough time. I would be interested in seeing this.

I know all about them. There are some other similar games out as well. It's practically a whole subgenre of naval/sci fi gaming these days. So I figured SDG should have an entry in that category. . . plus I needed a game for the mechanics I thought up.

Always open to new options....I love Naval gaming as well as aerial combat games, so something like this combines both worlds.
The only thing currently lacking is a nice line of minis which makes any game more visually appealing.

Also look at the Landironclads for the land version.

Also look at the Landironclads for the land version. Ken Yes, I saw those as well....so many games and so little time. I think I will focus on building up my NT fleets for now.

So got inspired on this on my drive to work this morning, and pulled out my spreadsheets. . . all my games begin their life as incomprehensible spreadsheets of numbers that only I understand BTW. . .
I had originally set it up to be a WWI style game. Now I'm thinking about giving it a more pre-dread motif. Just wondered what people's thoughts were?

As I own far too many (is that possible?) of Brigade's Aeronef line... I'd like a game that syncs with those models. I think that pre-dread would work... although, there are some decidedly "dreadnought-esque" ships.
I'll kick in some more meaningful musings once I'm out of work.

Do any of those have more than 1 forward or aft main battery turret? Big ones. . . not little stuff.

Most of the heavies... both Brit battleships, a German battleship, the Japanese battleship, the French & American new construction battleships...

Most of the older-style models fit squarely in the pre-dread genre... the newer ones are more transitional or post-dread.

Yeah, ok. Took a look. Will have to make some tweaks to accommodate some of those designs.
How do you feel about some type of role mechanic? Like battlecruisers get extra move but lose armor. Battleships get less move, but more armor and the ability to mount more guns, w/ tertiary batteries, dreadnoughts get some move, and some armor, but can mount fewer guns than a battleship, etc.

I like the sound of that. Roles are one of the unique elements of CBF that separates it from its competition.

Been doing some development work on this lately.
It always amuses me when I'm writing a new game how I will completely scrap the whole set of mechanics I'm using and start over again. . . multiple times. . .
Thank god for spreadsheets.
Still thinking about incorporating some sort of roles in the game. Kinda on the fence about it right now. What do people feel would be good benefits for each type of ship? Battleship - Destroyer? Maybe even torpedo boat?
Also, the miniatures I'm going to write the rules around include aircraft. . . so I'll have rules for them. They'll be more similar to fighters in CBF than the aircraft in NT. Initially I was skeptical about including them. . . but I think they'll add a good element to the game. In keeping with the 'rules light' approach for this game, they'll be pretty simple.
Oh. . . and I am actually thinking of including 'Dreadnoughts' as a bigger-than-a-battleship classification <gasp>. Yes, I might actually step down off my soapbox of how Dreadnoughts = Battleships.
