Does anyone else scratch build their own space ships?
If not, I suggest that you consider it. A visit to your local hardware or craft store should give you lots of inspiration.
Personally I wanted some very simple ships that I could use for a lot of different space navies. Sure, they wouldn't look as fancy as the neat ones from manufacturers modeling the ones from TV shows, but I'm on a budget . . . and building your own can make for large space navies for very little money.
Personally, what I primarily used were erasers and the ridged doweling plugs I found in a hardware store. They aren't fancy, but I now have four 14-ship navies (red, yellow, green and blue -- I like color since my eyes are old) . . . each has six ship classes (corvette, destroyer, light cruiser, escort cruiser, heavy cruiser and battlecruiser).
So, does anyone else build their own? If so, please share some insights on what you've used.

It sounds interesting, do you have some pictures we might see? Always like to see others ideas of how to build/paint spaceships.

I haven't got any photos. I'll try to get some this coming week . . . but no promises.
My ships are very simple. They have body and engines . . . and that aside from paint, that is it. I wanted very "generic" ships that were recognizable as to "class" but not as to specific design . . . that way I could use them for various different weapon mixes.
Also as I mentioned, I painted them in the colors of four different fleets . . . and I used bright colors because I like nice contrast between sides (due to poor eyesight). One fleet is RED, one is YELLOW, one is APPLE GREEN and the last is MEDIUM BLUE. I realize that most people would prefer more sedate colors, but I didn't make these for others, I made them for me.
However, there are lots of much more interesting shapes available out there if you just look for them. Again, Hardware stores and Craft stores are particularly fertile areas to search.

I've built some out of plasticard, balsa wood, and various gew-gaws from the hardware and craft stores. I'll try to get some pics up here.
My favorite scratchbuilt ships the dude made them with disposable razors! They were in a contest on Star-Ranger scratch-build forum. Basically, he used the textured square handle of the razor as interesting material to build the hull of his ship. It was a long, skinny freighter. I'll see if I can find the post.
I can build cool looking ships, but have issues coming up with things that look like weapons. And with Harry around, the ships have to have lots of weapons!
Since I started assembling GHQ models, I have a lot of turrets in various sizes around which helps some, but sometimes they just look a little too WW2, you know?

My scratch-built don't have any weapons showing . . . so that I can use them for numerous different designs within their class. Now I admit that they don't look as interesting or fearsome as those festooned with weapon turrets, but they work for me.
Sorry, I've been ill (and we had a houseguest) so I've not yet tried to take any photos.

Okay I've loaded a couple of photos of my inexpensive "scratch-built" spaceships to the Net. They are built out of erasers and wooden carpentry plugs (and the smaller ships of balsa and dowling). Please realize that they are super-simple. They do not have any weapons modeled because I wanted them to serve for a number of different weapons packages. I've shown just one of each ship per color (although I've got more). There are two photos, whose URLs follow (I hope) . . . and you might have to copy/paste to see them: i780.photobucket.com/albums/yy83/Bluebearlair/IMG_0210.jpgi780.photobucket.com/albums/yy83/Bluebearlair/IMG_0208.jpg-- Jeff

Those are very nice, wish I had the time, skill, and eye sight to make these.

Thanks guys! It was a design exercise to see if I >could< do it.
Was middling happy with results, but they certainly are cheap to make!

Wow those are great, the race 2 ships are my favourites. I'm sure if these were cast up they'd sell by the dozen
