An interesting idea was put to me. . .
For my 15mm infantry game. . what if instead of just writing a tighter and more comprehensive 40k alternative. . . I wrote rules tailored around sci-fi boarding actions in 15mm?
What do you think?
I could try and design my armor rules to be compatible.
In this way I might be able to break the whole 15mm thing up into more manageable chunks rather than 1 huge mega-system all at the start. . . which would be a nightmare to get pulled together.

Yep, I would like boarding actions, but why put a scale?

Well I guess there doesn't need to be a scale. . . and I see I already had a boarding actions thread. Maybe that's why this idea sounded so familiar.
But anyway, its a good idea regardless.

I think scale is important as it allows the gaming community to gauge the level of detail of individual models in the game. People tend to gravitate towards certain scales because they typically like that level of detail etc.
When you say 15mm I envision a game with a good combination of both vehicles and infantry with infantry possibly based together as squads, but maybe based individually as well.
When it comes to actually playing the game I agree its not really that relevant as people can just convert the scale and use their own collection.
I do like the idea of doing this first cut at your sci-fi game ground game as what appears to be an extension of the colonial battlefleet series. I think 15mm is good too as you likely intend to extend the game further and I think 15mm is a great scale for sci-fi battles (IMHO 40k should be 15mm - especially their Apocalypse stuff). If this was a stand alone product I'd suggest 28mm though, as when I think boarding actions I think more skirmish - kind of like Space Hulk

Really the grand-daddies of the boarding action game are Traveller's Ashanti High Lightning and Snapshot. Both of which used 15mm. So one reason for designing to 15mm is that it has been the "traditional" scaling for sci-fi for thirty years.
Plus there's an absolute flood of really really high quality 15mm sculpts available now with even more coming out all the time.

Will the boarding action infantry be in miniature or will it be in area movement (hexes or squares?)
Keeping it consistant with CB, Ashanti High Lightning and Snapshot you would want to use area movement. Plus it would work well with all of the good ship deck plans that are everywhere. They seems to be all marked with five foot scale squares.

Why would you want to cut out all the 28-32mm stuff? Part of the reason 15mm is expanding is because 28mm have been available in mass for a long time. If you want sales you have to offer another scale. Snapshot is the granddaddy and by todays standards doesn't have much to it. I found one when the other thread about boarding actions started and realize its 25-30 years old, so a new game is badly needed.
So again, why would you limit sales to one scale? It could be a 15-40mm game couldn't it? After all if it is a boarding action it would be fought in a limited space of some sort, so I think you could make it work for any scale.

Warchariot I don't think anyone is suggesting that scales be excluded. Most games do have a default scale though (admittedly mostly having to do with what models they are trying to sell you too).

I'd love to see something akin to Space Hulk for boarding actions, but with the simplicity and balance of CBF.
I also liked some of the concepts of SFU Module M with the ship areas rather than detailed maps, which works well when ships get extremely large for the mini scale.

www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgameexpansion/19179/star-fleet-battles-module-m-star-fleet-marinesIt broke ship types up into a number of areas and then had tables assigning all of the specific ship systems to one of these areas. Boarding combat then centered around control of those areas. I think you could do something similar with CBF, make control points that marines would contend over, and sides could be advantaged in some areas while disadvantaged in others based on the numbers. Each hardpoint is a control point, the engine room(s), the bridge and maybe an aux, CIC (FCon), equipment bay, shield generators, etc. Enemies in control of specific sections would have negative effects on the scale of crits. Module M has plenty of issues, but I think the idea of focusing boarding combat on control rather than just wiping out the other side makes for interesting tempo.

Actually that's a great idea. I could even partner with one of these guys who does starship floorplans and have them produce something specific to the game.
