I admit a fondness for predreadnought ships, especially those of the SpAm War. However, I have not played naval games in decades, and my memories of Seekrieg are not pleasant. My investigations of NT are promising.
However, given what I know of naval gunnery, ranges, and penetrations compared to SpAm ship's armor, and what I think I know about NT firing simulation game mechanisms, I am afraid that SpAm games will be little more than exchanges of very deadly fire, usually penetrating, and thus more a question of hit dice and damage rolls than tactical interactions - which may all be historically accurate (the US did easily pound the Spanish ships on both sides of the world).
I can easily foresee scenarios to address the war's imbalanced forces, but I wonder about the true gaming potential.
What experience among you who have played NT RotB for the SpAm War? (I have read the one AAR).
Please help me before I take the plunge!

not sure about that setup, but by me there is a group that has run many games of the russa/jap war of 1905 many times in 1/1000 with very much lots of fun. i have played the game with them and it was amsuing with lots of shots but not much in the sinking the one game i played. if nothing else find someone and play a game and see how it playes if nothing else.

I am guessing you read my AAR. I have not had the time(currently deployed) to play much SPANAM since RotB II came out. You are correct any historical engagement would be very unbalanced which is why I opted for a what if. rallyroundtheflag.blogspot.com/2011/05/remember-maine-naval-thunder.htmlAs stated above Russo-Japanese is a great time as well. NT lends itself very well to Pre-Dreads and I find I enjoy it as much or more thatn WWII action due to the large formations. HTH,
