Never being satisfied... So we play tested with the new Strike Fighter damage see (CB House Rules) and although the damage which was inflicted did do what we wanted something else popped up. Too many bits and pieces on the game board. Two players: either 1500 or 2000 points. Five to Eight escorts/capital ships per side. Game turn three or four there were just over one hundred bits and pieces on the game board. Thus it was taking over one hour to complete a single game turn. This effect made us sad. Thus we are looking to limit the total number of items which have the ability to change direction during the movement phase. Grape just goes eight and does some damage, no chess like thinking about each piece ... turn left or go straight ... am I covered ... time marches by fast and finally 30 to 45 minutes later player one has finished their movement.

We found that limiting the time a player has to move is the way to go. We let people have a set number of minutes for each phase, after all this is suppose to rep a fast combat situation not a what if I move here...no...what if I move here...no...ect. So with to eight ships we'd give maybe 5 minutes, more likely about three. We have a small hour glass that runs about 3 minutes. You can finish with the ship you're touching, then you're done.

When you play with fighters and missiles how many fighter squadrons and individual missiles would you guess are on the game board at the same time?

I don't think missiles are meant to be smart enough to have an overall tactical awareness; they are simply out there seeking for targets. And fighter squadrons should be too busy to see the whole tactical situation too.
Haven't run into this issue because we don't allow people to spend ages working out where everything should move to give the utmost possible advantage. The expectation is much as warchariot describes. The battle is meant to be fast. Players do NOT get the luxury of taking an hour for their move.
Our games - usually about 8 ships per side, have had around 50-60 missiles and grape in play just from my fleet alone.
