On the ship forms when they list the number for the fighters. Is that the number of fighters or the number of squadrons?

The number under 'Num' is the number of squadrons for that hardpoint. Each number to the right (ARC to H Dam) represents one of those squadrons and is the number of fighters in that squadron. For standard fighter types (strike/interceptor) it is 6 per squadron, and for gunships it is 1 per squadron.

Author, welcome aboard! Hamilton is right on with his answer. Remember that you don't have to put six fighters on a stand for each squardron, the rule suggest one. Many of us place three on interceptor/strike squadrons stands and one for gunships.

For example in the MvM shipyard print out for the Achilles class BBV. Leopard fighter Mk III Num=5 Mag=5. So that means 5 squadrons of 5 each?

Are you sure as mine says number 5 and mag 6? As I remember, fighter squadrons always have 6 fighters.

yes sorry . So that means 5 squadrons of fighters ,Cool. Yes, five squadrons with six fighters or one gunship. Remember, a hard point, generally, can only carry a number of systems up to/equal to the size of the ship. The Achilles class has 4 squadrons of Tiger gunships in hard point two. Each squadron is one ship. Then hard points four and five carry five squadrons of Leopards, each squadron is six fighters strong. You notice that most of the hard points are not at full strenght, five in this case, due to mass/ponits limits.
