These were done for Axis and Allies' Naval Miniatures Game (War At Sea), but as I've discovered Naval Thunder, I have every intention of using these on the map there! All are in 1/1800 scale, from various modelers on Shapeways; all are painted by moi. First up, Afrodi's Amagi miniature, the IJN battlecruiser that never quite was: Then we've got the conjectural Soviet battlecruiser, Kronhstadt, modeled by Squint: South Dakota and Alabama by Matt_Atknsn aka Roe Tengo: IJN Hiryu, also by Matt_Atknsn: IJN Tsushima aka A-150 design by Isoruku: Shinano, painted in an island camo scheme ala Zuiho, also by Isoruku: KM Europa by Isoruku: and next to a War at Sea/Wizards Graf Zeppelin (not painted by me, stock): I think that's enough for now...

Very nice, I like the detail on these. The light defuser for water is a nice idea. I saw this sort a thing with gray felt under it used for the floor of a spaceship for an Aliens game back in the 90s.

Thanks! The 'light defuser' is just my deck table. It's got a faceted glass top that makes a great seascape for photos.

Nice paintjob. Is that "dusty" texture common to all models? How do you paint white lines on flat tops?

Yes, Yes, How do you get those straight lines? I've been waiting to paint my aircraft carriers until I figure out how to get the straight white lines!

I think the dusty texture is a combination of the material (White, Strong & Flexible), my drybrushing techniques, and zooming way in with the camera. As for the deck lines, I use a Pentel white gel pen, and a thin piece of strip styrene as a straight edge. If you make a mistake, it wicks right off with some water; but once done, you spray it will DullCote and it seals it right in.

Thanks! It was the best way I've found to do carrier decklines. I have a buddy who uses decals, but getting white decals of the right scale have been a challenge... and the pen/ruler trick works well enough for me. Can't do dashed lines very well, though.

any chance to see a photo with the ships with something next to it to get an idea of how big they are? cool painting by the way. the glass table top really made them stand out better.

Those are really sharp.
They're comparable in detail to Panzerschiffe. . . I wonder whether the price point is similar.
Of course, with Shapeways you can get whatever you want, if you've got the talent or know somebody who does.

Thank you!
I've seen some Panzerschiffe minis but never worked on 'em. These seem a bit more detailed. As for price point, in White, Strong and Flexible, these run about...
$10 (Alabama) $15 (Hiryu) $14 (Shinano) $14 (Europa) $15 (A-150) $9 (Amagi) $9 (Kronstadt)
WSF is the best material, but it comes with a powdery, sandstone-like finish. A basecoat, followed by 2-4 coats of brush-on gloss, alleviate most of this and allow for a nice finish.

Detail is much nicer on most of the shape ways models I have seen. Most modelers are also working in 1/1800 scale to go with the WotC war at sea line as an alternative or to fill in gaps WotC never made.
You are correct a Google designer cold do almost anything in any scale and it eliminates the need for casting. As a result price is a it higher than PS which is still very nice for war gaming.
