See my post above concerning the size of the maps in the book.

I just posted on another thread that our games go between 4-6 turns. We play on a 8 1/2x6 foot table with 3" hexes. That means it's about 36 x 23 hexes. we start at speed five and the low Delta and Max speed rule gets us to gun fire in about 2 1/2 to 3 turns.
Again, I don't see it as "cheating" to have a more room to move. If you play with a floating map, I could still turn and run and shoot missiles, so what's the difference, except I don't have to move ships back onto the playing area every turn.

Well, I honestly didnt mean actual cheating, but generally if the scenarios are presented one way and you change those parameters, you are changing the balance of the game. For example if you changed the scenario so that both sides started 10 hexes away, it might alter your design decisions too. Sooo, now that my group has all been busily making ships with the 24(ish) hex distance as standard, I feel like changing the conditions up on them might be a bit...unwise.

Well, still Dread said he didn't mean for this to be a limit. QWe never have palyed the scenarios from the book. We just build to a point value and play on the biggest suface we can.

As I mentioned, the scenarios are presented that way in order to make the maps easily readable. Nowhere does it stipulate the size of the play area - since that will vary according to the play space available. You will notice all the measurements are given from map edges or objects that are placed at specified distances from map edges. I kinda wonder if a larger play space might be exactly what the dr ordered to shake up some of the assumptions your group has been playing with.

It's certainly possible. I have to tell you., RDF looks MIGHT tempting when the map is smaller and you're ending up behind each other on Turn 3.
Can you briefly post the dimensions you played with for playtesting the various scenarios? Some are obviously extremely impacted by the map dimensions (Ambush and Convoy Raid for example).

Our play area was 32x48 hexes.
Just look at the scenarios in the book, and instead of interpreting the map literally in terms of hex counts, replace that with a 32x48 surface and follow the instructions for placement of objects relative to map edges.
