I am in an Italian mood today...and my wife and daughter are still in Europe, so in order to keep myself busy, I have attempted to finish off a couple of classes that I have been sitting on for a while (I do have a few more that I will post in the not too distant future)...
Anyway, to business...
These were planned, but never built, being suspended in 1940 and never begun, owing to the outbreak of war, and the need to concentrate available resources on smaller warships (such as torpedo boats and destroyers). It is believed that they would be very similar (of course slightly improved) to the previous class (Garibaldi / Abruzzi), the differences being a modified AA battery (similar to the Littorio class), higher power machinery, thicker deck armour and a bridge structure modelled on the Littorio class and the other modernised battleships. While never built, they did receive the names below.
Sources consulted and referenced include:
Brescia – Mussolini's Navy: A Reference Guide to the Regia Marina 1930 – 1945. (2012)
