So I got an email today from a very nice woman who expressed disappointment with the new rules. Her concern was that the previous game called Battlestar Galactica: Colonial Battlefleet was about well. . . Battlestar Galactica, and the new game (simply "Colonial Battlefleet") was not. It had all kinds of things that didn't apply to the BSG universe.
Her concerns are well founded because they are true. Colonial Battlefleet is not a BSG game. It is a universal starship system with its own fluff that is adaptable to any setting. In fact, as I pointed out to her, the rules can be used to play BSG specifically or any other universe.
The system is designed to be modular. So I showed her that by dropping all the shields, energy weapons, and related techs from the game, the same old system she was familiar with was still lurking in the rules with similar movement, to-hit, and damage mechanics.
One goal of providing the Tech levels rules was to enable easy customization of the universe in that fashion. Pick the tech levels that correspond the the universe you want to play in, and go with those. You can make minor tweaks to include this or exclude that in cases where the tech levels don't perfectly match up to what you want. Hopefully I've done a pretty good job of eliminating the need to "tweak" but you can judge for yourself.
Alternately, you can just ignore the tech levels altogether and take a red pen to the master weapons table - crossing out everything that doesn't "belong." The game will still work that way.
The Colonial Shipyard tool (or good old pencil & paper) will allow you to quickly and easily design ships that fit in your universe according to the guidelines you put in place.
For the future, we plan on releasing fleet books with stats for a variety of popular miniature lines. I can tell you that a fleet book comprised of official stats for all or most of certain Ravenstar & Ironwind Metals starship lines in coming. To better tailor Colonial Battlefleet to the needs of a particular miniature lines, additional "custom" rules will be provided as well in each fleet book.
So, if you're using CB for BSG or any other sci-fi setting, you can do that today, and as we release more supplements, more tools will be available for customizing the rules to your particular preference.
