Just heard over on SCN that Ravenstar has been threatened with a C&D on its BSG line, will this have any flow on effect on the man vs machine sourcebook?

That is correct, however Chris also announced a new line of BSG style ships and a story line to go with it. I can't speak for Dread, but I do know the book is very close to done. The ships were designed and tested during the summer and with so many peopele already owning Chris' stuff, not to mention Fox, Hanger 18, and Iron Winds, I can imagine Harry would pull the book. Besides, a month or two back Chris pulled almost all of the Cylon ships, which also means Fox lost his, and the Rangers on SCN still wanted the discontinued ships included in the book. Having said all that, this is not good news and I can only hope Chris' new fleets will fill this now very large gap. If you want to follow the conversation on SCN follow this link: www.star-ranger.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=6576&p=72957#p72957Finally, Chris is having a sale this weekend only and discontinuing the ships as of Oct 3rd, so get your orders in! Here is the link for the sale: www.star-ranger.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=6573

Just heard over on SCN that Ravenstar has been threatened with a C&D on its BSG line Inevitable (and let's be honest, legitimate) but that still sucks for the gaming community.

Inevitable (and let's be honest, legitimate) but that still sucks for the gaming community. I'm actually quite curious as to why the community condones what is clearly the illegal use of another companies IP. Utility, in most cases. If consumers want to wargame a given setting and the holders of that IP won't/can't facilitate the consumers' desires, someone will fill the void. As it is, this niche market generally isn't worth a major studio's time/money to license their IP. Too much overhead means costs that are passed on to consumers, and that's generally prohibitive for something as marginal as tabletop miniatures. Thus, a void waiting to be filled by people who just want some decent miniatures. Again, I'm not saying Universal (in this case) doesn't have the right to protect their IP, but you want to know why it's generally accepted: people want to game and will find a way to do so.

"Utility, in most cases" is right. I want BSG ships, Raven made them over the last several years so I purchased from him. I also look at it from the POV that Universal didn't think this was worth the time/effort, but now see a market. Now that he is being shut down so to speak, that could mean that Universal is how willing to license their IP.

I also look at it from the POV that Universal didn't think this was worth the time/effort, but now see a market. I doubt it. Companies are required to police infringements of their IP and they probably finally became aware of what was going on. Their lack of interest in the market is probably illustrated by how long it took for them to find out about this. I doubt that anyone in this industry would be able to afford the fees that Universal would want in order to make this worth their while.

Could be, but Chris sure thinks the price is coming down and he will be able to afford it. I wonder if the new vid game a talk about a new show for SyFy is what is behind all of this. ;D

The immediate result is that Colonial Battlefleet: Man vs. Machine will in all likelihood not be officially associated with any miniatures lines. . . but the content will not change. As stated, the content has been developed for quite a while, we're just in the "getting it ready to publish" stage which is not fun and is why I've been dragging my feet on it.
The really sucky thing is I have some gorgeous painted minis pics from 3rd Fate Productions of painted Ravenstar models which I had been planning on using for artwork and now cannot. Not entirely sure what I will do about artwork at this point. Definitely going to be a much less pretty book than I had hoped for or anticipated.
All in all though, I'm glad we hadn't published it prior to this news so that we do not have to go back and remove all reference to and visuals of Ravenstar/Fox models.

So any chance some of these beautiful pictures could be posted on the forum for us to enjoy?
Robert
(and if someone wanted to make their own cover using those pictures that would be their business wouldn't it.)

Yep - people can make whatever covers they want and could even post them in the files section of the yahoo group if they were so inclined.
Yeah, I was thinking about making some of the pictures available online. They are too beautiful not to share, and I promised 3rd Fate some advertising so I was going to check with him. . . then go ahead and post some. I've got "raw" pictures of the minatures themselves. . . hundreds of them. . . but I will probably see about doing the photoshop thing to turn them into the artwork I had planned.

Hi Everyone . First off Sorry this has effected you and Dreads game book , this never came to mind. This hit me like a brick , but it happens i can't complain and hopefully in the future i will obtain the license. Ive tried for it before , but that was just when the new series was giving the go and with in a week the license went from a affordable price to way out of my range. So i pulled all my Battlstars and a few ships that look to much like a image that would cause issues down the line when i try again for the license. But alot of my ships will remain , they are my designs , so you will still be able to use them; BUt if you still want the battlstars or the metal dudes ships , Fox still carries them. blow will wil be a link to his email . It was a killer becasue a campletely new line i designed was about to come out , but it will be re-issued under another name , so you will still be able to get them and use them with Dreads game. I would love to see those pics too Dread. i'll drop in time to time . you can still get the line from Fox , he purchased all my stock, so he has a lot. fox@foxminiatures.com
