Anyone try anthing yet?
I have the ships for Dogger bank and am starting to aquire the rest of the BC for the opeing action of Jutland.
Just wondering if anyone has done anything on this yet with NT? I do not have the room or the resources to do full scale, but I am considering part of the opening actions.

Actually I have run the entire 72 ship version of Jutland at GenCon a couple years ago using Naval Thunder. Being able to do that was one of my design goals for the system.
We completed to a decisive conclusion in 5 1/2 hours.
Based on the experience, I'd say the German fleet, despite impressive tonnage, and arguably superior ships in many cases, had no real chance against the Grand Fleet as assembled. At least in a stand-up, last ship standing sort of way.
I still argue that Jutland was an actual tactical victory for the High Seas Fleet. . . just not enough to change the strategic picture. . . . not by a long shot.

I would have loved to have seen that. What scale ships did you use and what size area?
Do you have any set up maps OoB info?
Yes, I agree that Jutland was a German tactical victory...with better communications than they had during that time it could have changed drastically for both sides. That is all part of the fog of war we try to model which I why I was thinking about the signal idea.
Either way the Grand fleet could not have afforded many more victories like that.
Had Germany been more aggressive after Jutland things definately might have been different.

Used 1/3000 scale ships on a 12 x 8 surface. . . if I recall. . . Have several books. If you want some online resources, go here: www.worldwar1.co.uk

Hi all, I just bought NT for an activity at a high school. I have a week and a dozen or so kids to recreate the battle of Jutland. I have a full room and was thinking about trying to run the whole battle with all 250 ships. I figure two days to paint and mount the ships and set up the playing surface. Then we have two and a half full days (18 hours total) to play out the whole battle. I have experience wargaming, but I've never done naval before. The kids probably won't have experience with miniatures, but they will all have played computer games. I get some time with the kids before the week to start teaching rules and playing short demos. I have a bunch of maps, and it looks like I can set up the whole battle with 2400 scale ships in one of our larger classrooms. Any thoughts and advice would be terrific.

Two days to paint 250 ships, wow! Hope the kids are helping with that. I have done this battle in 1/2400 a long time age with 1st General Quarters rules on a gym style floor. Also tried the opening battle with Fletcher Pratt rules. I don't have much of any advise, other than have lots of help some you can run several shooting ships at the same time and have helping hands with movement.

Hi Larry, thanks for the response. I have 16-18 kids to help with the whole process, so that isn't so many ships per capita. I figure we will spray them all two different shades of grey, then paint decks. Each kid will be responsible for painting and basing his or (hopefully) her (haven't had any girls yet for my wargaming projects, but there is hope) fleet.
I will have 1-2 people assisting me, and I trust that the kids can run the battles w/o us standing over them all the time. They will keep each other honest. This doesn't happen until March, and I have a couple meetings with them before then, so I am hoping they are pretty familiar with the rules by the time the actual battle rolls around.
When you did it in the gym where did you find starting positions for the ships. I have found maps with fleet positions, but not maps that show where specific squads were. Or maybe that doesn't matter so much when they start so far away, with room to maneuver before engaging.
Helping hands with movement is an issue I hadn't thought about. 250 ships are a ton to move. I'll have to think that thru better.
Thanks! FAS

frank, I did my gym game a long time back and used what I could find to set up the battle. One book I have that I like is : Warships and Sea Battles of World War I. I found a copy at a used book store and a newer one on-line. Also, take a look at this, www.battle-of-jutland.com/resources.html it looks interesting.

Hi all, I got approval from the school, so if I get kids to sign up we are a go. I ordered some ships from Panzershiffe and the rules. I hope to play a couple small engagements in the next week to get a feel for the game. Thank you all for the advice!

So we filled the group, and I only have 6 kids. So I'm thinking of scaling back. Not sure how just 6 kids and 2 adult refs could complete the battle as fought. I will decide over Christmas break, after I have a chance to test play a bunch of NT

Maybe just play the Battlecruiser Action at the beginning of the battle?
That would also require a lot less painting!

I had my first meeting with the kids - they are all gung-ho to play the whole battle. We will see how the test battles go and go from there.

Maybe the test battles would get some more players to sign up? If you could demo where others might see it.

This is like a class, so everyone is enrolled already. But I do like the idea of making a public demonstration. Will help get future kids involved, and maybe even want to stat a club.
