The reimagined Cylon surprise attack on the Colonial homeworlds is underway. Colonial Fleet Headquarters on Picon has been destroyed and Admiral Nagala has taken command of the fleet aboard the Battlestar Atlantia, ordering a rally and counterattack near Virgon’s orbit.
Battlestar Rycon and her group are on routine patrol in the Right Sector, so called because it stands at a right angle to the Prime Line, the natural route between Caprica and Tauron. The group consists of Acropolis-refit class Rycon, Valkyrie class battlestars Ragnarok and Vigrid (Atropos), and Berzerk class escorts Beowulf and Sigurd (Pharaoh M). Also in attendance is the tender Melava to practice replenishment while underway exercises. 1709 points.
Rycon acknowledges Nagala’s orders, signals her group to Action Stations and changes course to comply. Moments later…
Dradis contacts! 3 large, unknown vessels just jumped in, well outside of our weapons range. They’re launching missiles and fighters, sir. (Note: 3 baseships - a Flagship, a Type 1 and a Type 2 - 1644 points)
Launch all remaining Vipers! Inform Admiral Nagala we will be delayed…
The Colonials are surprised to learn Cylon Raiders are jump capable as they microjump close to the group then swarm in.
“Vipers confirm contact, sir. Initial reports are coming in – piping it through now….”
“Rycon, this is Wraith Lead. Flights Six and Nine got hammered on the first pass before we figured out what we’re dealing with. The Cylons have a new type of fighter with no cockpit, they’re jump capable and they’ve got nukes. I repeat, they’ve got nukes. They’re squirmy Frakkers and they’re definitely here to fight but I think we’ve got a handle on them. The heavy ship missiles are another story. We won’t be able to keep them and the Raiders off you.”
Defending Vipers easily keep the Raiders at bay. ASGMs are another story and a couple leak through to damage battlestar Ragnarok. The Colonial juggernaut is just about to enter weapons range of the baseships when the Cylons catch an initiative break. They get two heavy raiders next to Rycon and surround them with the last remaining Raiders as cover. The Vipers can’t get at them! Before:
After:
The covering Raiders have been slaughtered but the heavies got through. Flak misses and they land hard and unload Centurions. Six Colonial Marine units face six Centurion units and Rycon is taken!
The Cylons try a similar move against Sigurd but Vipers and flak smoke the attackers.
Berzerk Beowulf swings in behind Rycon to stay out of her weapon arcs and starts sending mag cannon rounds at and into the Cylon flagship. A dead Rycon drifts past the Cylon flagship.
Beowulf continues the fight!
Berzerk Sigurd engages another baseship as battlestars Ragnarok and Vigrid close the range.
Missiles continue to score and Sigurd loses her PD. She’s unable to get it back online before four more slam home. She’s lost 44 of 46 points but is still in the fight.
By now the Cylons have used all of their ordnance and have no way to fight. They jump out. The mangled Colonials keep the field but have lost Rycon. Ragnarok lost 45 of 53 hull, Vigrid 30 of 53, Beowulf 10 of 46 and Sigurd 44 of 46. However, I screwed up and allowed some Vipers to shoot down a couple of ASGMs that were going to hit Ragnarok so she could have been lost as well. I guess I could go back and play out their attack on her. 52 of 108 Vipers are recovered and the tender is intact. According to the rules Rycon could be recovered because the Cylons left the field but I figure the Centurions would have blown the magazines. This BSG will be of no use if able to join Admiral Nagala. Cylon damage was 15 of 74 off the flagship and 54 of 74 lost from the Type 2.
The Cylons really pulled it out at the end. Had Rycon not fallen the Machines would have been torn up!
Here are some beauty shots of the ships. Tender Melava – a freebie Ravenstar threw in with an order.
Rycon and a Valkyrie class:
Lastly a baseship, Berzerk, and the aft end of the tender.
