My sources say something similar, but differ in the date of adoption. German capital ships carried black identifying marks on turret tops until late 1917 when they switched to the higher visibility white. Additionally, smaller warships carried smaller versions on the forecastle.
The Germans also painted funnels a specific color for each op... but were not completely pleased with the results due to their fragile nature. They experimented with painting the sides and glacis of turrets on the Kaisers... I think as early as Jutland. They found this to be unsatisfactory and returned to painting funnels.

German Battleships 1914-1918 (2) by Gary Staff Statement in this reference: During all active operations, the aft funnel of German Warships was painted red as a recognition device. The funnels were repainted grey on the return journey before the ships came within sight of land.
This certainly kept the painters busy... ;D

You don't have to repaint them before and after each battle, you just need a ship painted in each scheme. That way you are always prepared. I would have liked to have seen one of those big battleships sitting next to the tiny Russo-Japanese ships on Sunday. The size difference is staggering for just 10 years or so. I should have asked on Sunday, but what do you make the labels out of? I am using the flags you sent me though email and am thinking about using mailing labels, but I can't find a good enough size. Did you use something else for them?

I just print on card stock or regular paper and cut to size.

Aw, now you know you want to go for ultimate in realism, Aaron. ;D Hey, I am not saying I did not think about it. On a side note I just received an e-mail from my vendor and the rest of the Konig and Kaiser should be here in 2 weeks. Hopefully in time to be painted for Little Wars. I do believe the Axis used painted decks for identification. The Germans used black swastikas in a white circle surrounded by red. The japs used the red circle on the carriers and the bow of the bb's. I also think the Italians used red and white diagonal stripes on the bow. Just tossing that out there, i have seen it on some painted minis thou. theguy
