I'm just curious how many ships everyone either has or plays with? I've got bunches of different ships for different genre's, and I'm putting together CB and MvM fleets.... but what do you play with? How many ships do you field at once?

Of course that depends on what you're doing. If you're playing around 2-3,000 points, and want the fighters for the Cyborgs, you'll have 4-6 major ships. The Colonials are more costly, so figure they will have about 2/3 the number. If you want to bring some of the smaller ships you can get up around 10-12, but you'll have limited number of fighters. Our experience is the game runs about six turns either way.

So do you field everything you own or do you switch stuff out? I guess what I'm looking for is the size of your typical game (and you said 2-3000 points) but do you have more than one set of ships? How big is your total Colonial fleet, in other words? 3000, 6000, 10000 if you were to field everything...

How big is your total Colonial fleet, in other words? 3000, 6000, 10000 if you were to field everything... Well, I have at least 70 Colonial ships doing a rough count, 20+ are Battlecarrier classes. I have 25-30 Cyborg ships. These are the painted ones, I also have a few dozen unpainted ships. Then my buddies also have fleets close to that size, so, each time we play we use different ships. But we do have favorite ships that come back again and again. For the Cyborgs we like the 3blades and the 2blades the best. For the Colonials we the like the heavies across the board. Oh, we also can field 100 or so fighter stands for the Cyborgs and a good 60 for the Colonials. We have unpainted of these also. That said, you don't need that many to have a fun game of MvM. The scenarios are all fun and different as to the varying size you play. They also have great replay ability because of the addtional points roll. ;D

Generally you'll be looking at about 8-10 ships per side for your typical game, not including the gribblies like the fighters. I don't actually own any minis, but I have a good ol' horde of counters from AT2 that would let me field around 30-40 ships if I wanted.
I wouldn't expect to see that many ships on a single side, however, at least until I have more than a basic idea of how my 'system assault' scenario might work, and even then it'd still involve multiple players.

A dozen or so ships a side is my usual maximum, if you want to play an all your ships against all my ships game your welcome, but you'll have to bring your own table because once I set out all my ships there won't be any room for yours LOL.
Seriously thats why space games have points values, most of us enjoy the collecting side (or scracthbuilding in my case) and have far to many ships to field at once. A major part of the tactics is to choose the best subset of your ships you have for the mission at hand within the points limit.

Well, I was just talking about BSG style ships. Not sure how many I own all together, but back to the point.
Yes, 12 or so ships on a side is a big game and MvM it would be smaller ships unless you're playing 10,000 points +. Typical for us is about six per side plus fighters.

Do any of you every play 10 or 12 players with 5 or 6 per side. Have the big left to right table to fight across after pinning several hex mats together. Kind of like they do with a big game of Flames of War.
