I'm curious if the limits on smaller ships based upon how many large ships you take is there for balance or flavor reasons.
I have a lot of small ships that I am unsure about ever being able to field without playing a truly enormous game.
Would the game break down if you allowed nothing larger than a heavy cruiser and did something like 3 Light Cruisers\Destroyers per Heavy Cruiser?

IMO, you'd be fine to do that as long as everyone playing agrees to it. I would play a game like that. Sometimes I like having the smaller ships play a larger role.
I've been toying with the idea of making an "Ogre in space" scenario featuring a single battleship against a bunch of smaller ships. It would definitely need some playtesting.

I think one large ship vs swarm of smaller ships would result in the small ships sitting in the rear arc of the large ship firing up its ass without it being able to retaliate.

I never said it was a well thought out idea! ;D
I would probably give the BB a rear firing arc (or 360) just for that scenario.

The reason it is there is to keep people from trying to break the system. Just fesign what you want and play.
