When I take my minis on the road, I like to place them in boxes where they won't get jostled around, especially in the car. I bought a piece of sheet metal and trimmed it to fit the bottom of my box. I then bought some rare earth magnets. I drilled a small hole in the bottom of the flight stand and superglued the magnet in the hole. The fighter stands stick to the sheet metal just enough so they don't move around. In the picture, the small silver dot in the flight stand bottom is the magnet.

Do you also do the same mounting of the ship to the stand?

Personally, I don't.
The size of the ship mini would dictate the size of the magnet in order to hold it at the top of the stand.
I have thought about using smaller magnets to attach the fighters to the stands.

I have some Japanese float planes in 1/300 that are very small and they have a small magnet on them. It works well and I don't have to have a stand for every model. The fighters are about the same size as the float planes. Also, I played a CY6 game at Historicon last year in 1/600 scale where the planes had magnets!
