So far in my space scrappin' career I've been mainly a plain tabletop/ carpet and measuring tape kind of fellow.
Now I've got Colonial Battlefleet I want to get into this Hex map thing in style--what spacey hex boards do you all use?
In my case, cash isn't too much of an obstacle but space (pardon the pun) in my flat is--is it possible to get black plastic/foam tiles about, say, A4 size (or thereabouts), that one can slot next to each other?
I've seen big rolls of space hex around the net, but I've really no room at home to stick something like that, not without throwing away lots of books or clothes or something.
Thanks
PS- Sorry if I've put this thread in the wrong forum. It seemed the best place.

I have purchased many mats, both non-hex and hex. felt and others. Currently we use Holz Mats found at: www.hotzartworks.com/Look under game mats. Seen below are two mats ytogether with 3inch hexs, but he makes them in 1-4 inches and you can doulbe side the mat if you more than one size. They come rolled up on a tube and can be stood up ina closet. Attachments:

Allow me to add that the Hotz Mats come in a variety of sizes . . .
Quarter Size = 22" x 34" (56cm x 86cm) Half Size = 45" x 34" (114cm x 86cm) Full Size = 45" x 72" (114cm x 183cm) Double Size = 90" x 72" (228cm x 183com)
And Hexes are available in 1, 1½, 1¾, 2, 3, 4 or 5 inch sizes (measured flat side to flat side). Mats are also available in squares and plain of course.

Cheers, Chaps! These Hotz mats look incredible. Think I may have to invest.
1 inch hex may be the way to go, too.

This post was some time ago, but I wanted to say that for $6.50 in glitter felt and a couple of $0.99 bottles of craft paint, I painted a 6'x4' mat for my boyfriend for Christmas. It was time consuming, but it was super inexpensive, and it looks pretty good. Plus I made it myself, which makes it an even cooler gift, lol. I cut out a stencil on my scrapbooking Cricut machine for the 1.5" hex grid and painted the stars with spatter technique along with some drybrushing to make the nebula areas. The styrofoam planets they painted look great with it! www.steeldreadnought.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=downloadattachmentpage&board=aar&thread=401&post=3244

Yeah, I have two Hotz mats myself that I bought to upgrade from the MKP mat I used to use.
Unless you are using really small ships though, I would recommend 2" hexes. A 6x4 mat with 2" hexes will still be big enough for a good sized game, and make things a lot easier.

That is spectacular indeed. Very nice . . . and the half-ball planets look great too. BRAVO!

Here are a bunch of shots of mine in use: doodlebot.net/redoubt/?p=306It's the one that Musashi enterprises put out for their Starblazers game. I love it! I use it extensively for all my Hex-based space games. I'm in mid-paint on my BSG stuff now (In fact you can see some of the Vipers and Raiders in use in the pictures) I have all my new Style Raiders and Vipers based, as well as my Colonial and Cylon Fleets, now all i need to do is slap on a bit of paint! Hopefully get in a test game this weekend. -Mike

It may be unavailable now, I have had it for many years!
I would send them an email, their store still runs and they are really good about replying to emails.
