Right, this is my first attempt at starting a thread on this forum - I'm interested as to how many replies I get... Going along the lines of favourite navy and period, I'm interested as to everybody's favourite ship and their reason why(if any). I am leaving it open, it doesn't have to be from the 20th century.. My favourite...the 8th HMS Warspite (Queen Elizabeth class battleship, post 1930's reconstruction). Why? I like the design (a personal thing - I do like the other RN battleship [and cruiser] designs from the late '30s as well), and also the fact that she kept scrapping to the end, on the way to the breaker's yard...

I've always liked the German WWI BCs, espeacially the Seydlitz. Why? The wing turrets along with the power and grace of these ships.

The Japanese Shimakaze class destroyers from WW2. Sleek lines, awesome speed and could fire a spread of 15 long lance torpedoes.

I haven't picked out a favorite yet, but I am fond of a number of the really funky Russian Pre-Dread era ships . . . they might not have been all that good, but they definitely had "character".

Wow, that's hard. . .
Love the SoDaks. Really the best battleship built for my money. The Iowas were probably actually better battleships, but the SoDaks were so lean, mean, and efficient!
Liked the QEs during WWI. Just head and shoulders above everything else at the time.
The KGVs during tha era were cool also, as were the Konigs and their uber-heavy armor.
Then of course the Yamatos. Who could NOT love a ship with giantic guns, huge armor, and lots and lots and lots of smaller guns.

I thought that the clue could be in your name Harry... :-) By the way... "scrapping on the way to the breaker's yard..." - pun NOT intended.. But now that I do see it...

I thought that the clue could be in your name Harry... :-) Well, yeah that one too. Really sad it never saw real combat the way it was intended to.

Mighty Mo! Why? Because I'm a Missouri native and there's just something awesome about the Iowa class. Plus, I like that they were modernized and actually used.

Well, as my handle would elude to, my favorite is the Deutschland class pocket battleship Admiral Graf Spee. She was a technological marvel when first built. She and her sisters were purpose built for surface raiding, a task in which they did quite well all things considering (and much more resource efficient than for the larger German surface ships in WWII).
Graf Spee also met her fate in a what is one of the most interesting engagements of the Atlantic.
Plus, how can you not love six 11" and eight 6" guns on a heavy cruiser hull?!

My favorite is the IJN Myoko class CA's of WWII. 10x8" guns, 8x5", 16x24" TT w/reloads and still able to turn 33+ knots. The "Long Lance" torpedoes had the range of Battleship guns.
IMHO they looked better than the follow-on Atago class. Pre-radar it would have been interesting to see how they would have done in the planned night attack on the USN Battlefleet before the "Decisive Battle".
