I would be interested to know from the forum members, who their favorite navy(s) were and the specific time period they like to play naval battles in.
I'll start: Favorite Navy: Imperial Japanese Navy Period: WWII

I'll have to say RN WWI. I also prefer big guns ands battlelines, and they had the coolest ship names. Anxious to see the U.S. WWI fleet in action though.

For WWII the U.S. between wars ships are some of my favorites, because they give other navies a fighting chance, where the South Dakotas and Iowas really don't. The North Carolinas are on the fence.
Looking forward to releasing a 'War Plan orange' supplement at some point.

The War Plan Orange supplement should be fun.
If kenh01 has any pics of his complete 1:6000 IJN fleet to post that would be great.

Personally I like the Pre-Dreadnought period (roughly from 1879-1905). The ships are very individual in appearance . . . for example, in the Russian navy there were cruisers with 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 stacks! Smokestacks were sometimes clumped, sometimes spread out, sometimes staggered and sometimes even side-by-side.
Ships even of the same "class" were often armed differently as the world's navies experimented with different concepts. While the Russo-Japanese War was the "biggie" among actual combats, there are lots of very interesting "what if" match-ups (such as Germany-Britain).
For a very colorful period . . . and I mean that in the sense of "color" as well as interest because navies were not all painted grey . . . give the Pre-Dreadnought period a try.

Not much of a photographer (old camera!!), but a friend is comming over next week to take some pics of my 1:600 WW2 armies and board for Memoir44, so maybe I can talk him into taking some pics of my fleets as well (they were all painted by Leslie by the way) The full IJN and an equal number of USN from WW2 - about 400 ships total (I lost count)

I know this is somewhat off topic, but I also like Age of Sail and Civil War. I do wish someone would put together a nice easy and fun set for both these periods. I've played Fire As She Bears and like it, but didn't love it. For Civil War I've palyed the old Iron Clads and some others, but they either allow ships to sink to fast or not at all.

I have given some thought to writing an age of sail game someday. Probably never going to do ACW though. Actually, one of my first designs for 'The New Starship Game' was actually age-of-sail motif, with big, slow battlelines and more of a fleet game. But the old Colonial Battlefleet was just so popular it made more sense to at least start by writing a new, fully featured game around those concepts.

Not a navy, but a campaign. Since I've been a teen, I've been fascinated with the Solomons Island campaign, the cruiser battles from Savo Island to Blacket Sound : navies with like sized forces, similar ships, duking it out at night. Great wargaming set up!

You have to wonder what the USN losses would have been if the so-called decisive battle had been fought before they had learned night fighting lessons & the effective use of radar in the Solomons.
The Mediterranean Sea Battles also offered many cruiser/destroyer actions.

Gotta love those night battles. Hey, as anyone found a way to fight night battles without turning the lights off and using flashlights?

Of course, all my pics are because of how the ships are modeled and how I paint them. ;D
I think Italian WWII battleships and cruisers are my favorite to paint (I'm a glutton for punishment, I like the stripes).
Plus, German battleships and battlecruisers because they have really elegant looking camo patterns.
Pre-Dreads from Russo-Japanese War are entertaining, too because they're all so different, and some of the guns are pretty cute. And the Russian paint scheme in the black with the ochre yellow funnels looks really sharp. Especially if you do all the rigging (which I don't).
I really, really hate the HMS Rodney design - put that one down as my LEAST favorite. I get that loathing from Harry, I must say.
Oh, and anything with more than 20 secondary weapons modeled on it is a no-no. (=Yamato).
