Following on from Cougar_DK's thread about flotillas, I'm interested to hear everyone's views as to what their preferences are - would they use miniatures or use ship counters from other games (which I will decline to mention, after all it is a NAVAL THUNDER forum discussion board)? I am referring specifically to 1/6000th scale actions. I am aware that other counters (from NT, but also possibly Litko tokens) would also be on the gaming area. I am interested in everyone's experiences as to what works (or not). Thanks in advance...

I'm kinda the heretic here, as the battle being fought is the thing for me, not the pretty ships. I've used everything from paper clips to pecan shells (with paper for decks and sails, and toothpicks for masts, they make OK sailing ships for a 14-year old) to represent ships on the tabletop, and I certainly don't have any objection to counters, especially if the counters you're thinking of are the one I like to use, the ones from the company with a name beginning with "A". Mixing ship counter and ship miniatures is a little clunky but if that's what I have to do to get the battle on the table that's what I do.
For others the visual aspect is the thing, and it's their tabletop so they can play the way they like. I love to look at well-painted miniatures, and I'll cheerfully game with such ships that others have painted.
