I've been doing this naval wargame thing since 1975 or so (said the crusty old man), and the most fun I've had with it has been when we were playing a campaign. We've had campaigns from history (such as the Spanish-American War and the RJW) and some that we invented (the Russo-American War of 1905) and several mini-campaigns that represented as little as 2 or 3 weeks of "map time". Winning a battle on the table is always satisfying. Winning one that came about because of your own plans and machinations is doubly so. It's also entertaining to watch guys who have always been the boldest fire eaters in "one off" battles become painfully cautious when they have to think about tomorrow

I'm not a big campaign guy, but I do like linked scenarios where you have to keep forces around for the big battle at the end.

Played the Guadalcanal campaign in the late 70's. I played as the IJN, but did not play as cautious as the IJN did historically. I reacted very aggressively, by utilizing my Yamato & Nagato class BB's with numerous CA's to gain an edge very quickly. It forced the USN player to send in forces piecemeal which usually resulted in their loss. Even got to use the Kitakami and Oi to good effect in one scenario (only time I used them), sinking a USN fast Battleship. We played one night a week for almost two months. At that time he finally had to remove his troops from the island.

The height of my career was in a Mediterranean campaign in the middle 90's. I played the Axis but, as if I wanted to win (unlike Mussolini's underlings). We captured Malta, closed the Med to Allied shipping and kept the Afrika Korps supplied so they could chase the Allies out of Egypt. By the middle of 1941, the Med was an Axis lake and the Allied players mostly gave up.

I always thought the Med would make a great campaign. If the Italians could have prevented Taranto and used the Italian & German airpower available, the RN would have had a very rough time. As it was Crete was disaster for the RN.
