Gentlemen, It has come to my attention that the source of the "Houston 1/1000 Pre-Dreadnoughts" isn't as widely known as I thought. They are available from Great Endeavors . . . here's the address: www.greatendeavours.co.uk/ships/index.php-- Jeff PS, While nominally 1/1000 scale, I'm told that they actually vary a bit from that . . . but they are approximately correct.

These are what we used at NAVCON and what I have also been ising to base my masts for my 1/2400 PS ships. This collection belongs to a agmer in Milwaukee who hosted the even and I believe were painted by Leslie.

Note . . . those splash markers are the same as I used in my 1/2400 Yellow Seas game . . . but I mounted mine on pennies. They are available (pack of 20 for $6 US -- plus shipping, of course) from Great Endeavors (source of the Houston ships).

I have three of these from years ago when they were still owned by Huston under Lizard's grin brand. I have always wanted to find some more. The fleet packs GE offers seems like the way to go. Thanks Jeff for the link.

If using them with "Naval Thunder" rules, I would most definitely use the old naval gaming rule of all measurements from and to the forward funnel since these are hugely out-of-scale . . . most "big ships" are in the 5"-6" range in length . . . and I've heard that there is one US heavy cruiser that is about 8" long.

Yes, I agree . . . by the way, what size table do you have, Aaron? Mine is 5'x10.5'.
By the way, it is snowing here on Vancouver Island, BC. We've got four or five inches on the ground today . . . but it will probably turn to rain soon, the temperature is rising and is now above freezing.

So that's where our snow went. It rained here, which never happens, except today of course. My buddy and I just brought the spanish/American and Japan/Russia

Yes, I agree . . . by the way, what size table do you have, Aaron? Mine is 5'x10.5'. Table I have been using at home is 4'x8' I do have 2 6' x30" folding tables I can slide together if need be...I need to get some more Marine Vinyl to make that happen though as it is only 54" wide. So far 4'x8' has worked for the battles we have done including Yellow Sea.

We play on a 6'x9' and can add another two feet if need be making it 6'x11'. Anything more than 6' wide is hard to reach even though we can walk around the table.

Larry,
That should give you some good room for the Houstons. With that large a table you might even want to play with tripling the speed/ranges when using the big models.

Yep, I think so. One of the things we noticed with the Scarborough battle was ships don't close that fast, which is good, otherwise we would run off the table .

Remember that in the RJW, ranges were much closer . . . due to poor range-finding equipment.

Hey, the Huston's arrive today, well yesterday actually but had to sit at the post office overnight. They are a bit rough. My buddy received his Russians a week or more ago and has been busy building them. He has replaced many/all of the side turret/Barbette gun barrels as these didn't cast very well. You also need the cut, scape, and file on these guys, but in the end will be worth it. I think I ended up with some copies of the same ships, so might offer them here if someone would be interested . I'll let you know when and what I have after I get working on these. Thanks again to Bluebear for pointing me to where I could find these.

You are welcome, Larry. Duplicates might be sister-ships. For example, even though they have different "stats", the Mikasa and Asahi look the same (difference is in the type of armor used).

Look forward to seeing the pics of the finished products.
If you think of it some pics of the entire process would be great as I was always curios what the unassembled unpainted models looked like.
I believe the ones we played with at NAVCON were assembled and painted by Leslie.
