I feel that as a game author, I should be able to win consistently when playing them. However, I have found that by and large I suck at playing my own games. What does this say about me?

I think you should figure it as you lost the skills you had when designing the games, because you are working on new projects that take other skills.

It might say that you have designed a balanced game system that gives all players a fair chance at winning....I really like the d10 sydtem in NT for this reason.

Are you losing badly or by narrow margins? I would venture to say that you usually just lose by a slim margin. Either that or your game strategy may need adjustment. Because for sure you would know the game rules better than anyone. ;D

Slim margins. Get too agressive. Funny thing is I do consistently win games that I did not write. Lol

Perhaps subconsciously you feel that the dice should favor you in games you designed . . . that you are OWED good results . . . and so you get a bit too aggressive.

Hey, just because you designed the game doesn't mean you know EVERYTHING.

Some would call that the "Halsey Syndrome". ;D Very agressive whenever given the opportunity. If he had been at Leyte Gulf with his modern BB's what a glorious fight it would have been. Probably complete annihilation of the IJN surface fleet, instead of chasing carriers that were short of pilots.

That could be. . . . Or maybe I get impatient to blow @#$# up?? And "blowing 'stuff' up" is bad how? Ah, if you get blown up in return . . . I get it now. Harry, you merely need to institute your "Game Designer's ships Cannot be Blown Up" rule . . . just be sure to include it in the fine print in each rule set. -- Jeff

Historical parallel: Wasn't Yamamoto the author of the Midway war games he played & won, prior to having his fleet sunk at the actual Battle of Midway?

Yeah, but I think there was a quite a bit of 'cheating' involved, up to actually 'resurrecting' a carrier (Kaga?) from the dead in the exercise. I think it would be exceedingly hard to learn anything from wargames that twisted.

Well it was his (Yamamoto) ships and if he didn't win he wasn't going to play anymore...
