I'm picturing a handful of Colonial ships (4-6) in close formation with little or no space between them. What space there is is mostly filled with Vipers. The spaces around all this are covered by fighters as well.
The Machines have very limited options attacking from the inside and have to chew through outer layers before getting to the good target(s).
Except for being a sweet missile magnet what weaknesses do we see here? Microjumps don't appear to have a place against this. Is it cheesy?

"Except for being a sweet missile magnet" This is exactly what happened when we try to do something like this. Also, it keeps you from being flexible as your ship movement is more or less set before you go. Finally, lets say I win the initiative and go first. I move ships, you move ships, now I launch, you launch. Now unless you could launch enough to cover the gaps, I move/mirco jump fighter around your ships, your shell starts to crack or weaken. Then the missiles strike!!! ;D You do have the right idea, as I like to use small screening ships to help with PDF and the fighters to cover my big ship approach, but if you place all your eggs in one basket and the basket fails, it's all over.

Thanks Buddy,
There are so many options with this game. The same scenario can turn out a bunch of ways so bigtime replay value.
One of my old mentors once told me, "Whoever said it's good to learn from mistakes never said they had to be your own."
My new stuff from Raven is good to go so I'll have more reports and photos before long....

Glad the Raven stuff came in. I just ordered some Fox stuff which should come next week.
I have plenty of mistakes you can learn from...lol
You're right about the replay value. The varible points gives so many different fleet make-ups for the modren war and then you can always play early war!

While the "Tortise" may be a great formation for the tactical battle, it is quite likely to win the battle but lose the war.
The Machines should be able to quite easily bypass it and move on to attack now vulnerable rear areas.
It would be a viable defense for last stand scenarios.
I like my battles to have a context in the larger war.

I like my battles to have a context in the larger war. Agreed. We usually agree upon realistic break points. Very rarely (and typically scenario specific) does a vessel "fight to the death" without an attempt to extend an escape. Rear-guard, last-stand situations being an obvious exception.

I actually had considered putting morale rules in CBF like those in NT, but felt that maybe it could be handled with appropriate scenario objectives, and will certainly be handled as part of the campaign system.

Cool.
I like the way morale works in NT. A simple concept that's easy to apply.
