Source: Naval Weapons of WWII by John Campbell. IJN 51cm (20.1")/45 gun Projectile weight = 4409 lbs. Never built
IJN 48cm (18.9")/45 gun Projectile weight = 3800-3900 lbs. two guns built, one fired successfully
Muzzle velocity based upon looking at IJN 18", 16", & 14" guns would probably stay in the 2500 - 2600 fps. Range based upon looking at the IJN 18" & 16" and scaling up would be in the 48,000 -50,000 yard range.
Source: The Battleship Yamato by Janusz Skulski Table 10: 46cm (18.1") Gun Performance Range 20,000 yards - vertical plate penetration = 566 mm - horizontal plate penetration = 416 mm Range 30,000 yards - vertical plate penetration = 167 mm - horizontal plate penetration = 230 mm
Going back to source #1 the weight of the Yamato's 18.1" AP was 3219 lbs. The 20" has a weight of 4409 lbs. This is a 1,190 lbs. increase or a 36% increase in shellweight. Even being conservative, I would expect the 20.1" gun to penetrate 15% more armour.

Source: Naval Weapons of WWII by John Campbell Other large caliber guns: USN 45.7 cm (18")/47 gun Mk A/O Projectile weight = 3848 lbs. Muzzle velocity = 2400 fps Range = 43,453 yards (this done at 40 deg. elevation, 45 deg. elevation would have increased the range further) Able to penetrate 16" side armour and 6.25" of deck armour out to 30,500 yds. This gun was fired in February 1942.
German 53 cm (21") Gerat 36 Muzzle velocity = 2690 fps Shell weight = 4850 lbs. Range = 51,900 yards Gun was ordered in 1938 and one gun and cradle were nearing completion by the end of the war, but the proof mounting was apparently unfinished.
German 40.64 cm (16") SKC/34 Muzzle velocity = 2657 fps Shell weight = 2271 lb. Range = 39,800 yards Intended for 'H' class BB but several ended up as coast defence guns.

Dread, may I still get the information you have on the Montana Class? We're going to try to incorporate it into a "what if" scenario we're running on Sunday.

Harry, are you sure that you're NOT getting hooked on Pre - Dreads instead?

The pre-dreads were really cool, yes.

The pre-dreads were really cool, yes. Always a good thing when we can convert the guy who created the game to play.

Speak'n of pre-dreads, I wonder how many fleets of them it would take to sink a Montana... ;D

We'll just have the Yamato going at it with the Montana then. Is that your subtle way of saying stay on topic and give me the Montana stats? As for the question I do not think it could be done on the open seas as the Montana would blast them to oblivion before they could even close the range and stay out of range by outrunning them. A pre-dreads long range at 20" would almost be short range for the Montana and I doubt they would have any chance to penetrate if they did somehow manage to get in range and score a hit. Since we do not play with limited ammo rules I do not think it would be much of a match.

Can somebody take these and put them into a card and post it here?
This should give you everything you need for the Montana stats. I'll try to do the points here soon.

Harry, you're a legend! Thank you! BBOK you have an interesting sense of humour...That reminds me, I watched Steven Seagal in Under Siege the other day...although they only sank a sub...

Aaron, what if the Montana was anchored in a harbor and the crew was ashore... ;D They might be able to start enough fires or board her....not sure they would have enough pre-dread style torps to sink her.

I suppose the predreads could always ram the Montana if she was sitting still... ;D
