I found the ends of Q-Tips aka cotton swabs can do the job nicely for a fraction of the cost - and no waiting around for shipping to arrive. These are the basic pieces without paint or touchup. I'm sure some of the geniuses here can improve on the idea with some paint and drybrushing, but you get the idea. The ship is an Axis & Allies Provence on 1.5 inch hexes.

I like them...what do you have at the base to hold them up...Small washer?

Either way another nice alternative. I also like seeing that someone else is using WoTC Minis.

Hmmm, if you have a three-hole punch, you probably have some perfect "bases" for these already made.

I've had a go at this technique and I'm pretty impressed! ;-)
I used some modelling green stuff rolled into a clyinder & inserted inside the Q-tip tube to give it weight and then inserted the pointy end of a notice board thumb tack to form the base. The green stuff cures and secures the thumb tack in place.
I then painted the Q-tip and filled the slightly concave dome head of the thumb tack with some PVA glue to blend the surface.
Once dry, painted the base blue, and there you are, good to go!
I'm using Navwar 1/3000, so to my mind it seems to scale well with smaller ships.
Cheers! Wilf

Do the shell splashes have any effect on the game or are they just for looks. Yes, I know nothing about sea power past the year 1815.

Do the shell splashes have any effect on the game or are they just for looks. Yes, I know nothing about sea power past the year 1815. For main guns each they mark each ship firing at another. For each shell splash beyond the first they add +1 to the die roll needed to hit the target.
