I have a question about ship markings - peacetime vs. wartime. In doing research on ships for the Java Sea battles, I've seen photos of ships with prominent markings. The Dutch DDs had large 2-letter codes painted on their hull sides (Kortenaer - KN, Evertsen - EV, etc.). The US 4-stack DDs had large white numbers on their hull. These were very large markings, extending from almost deck level down to the waterline. Do you know if these markings were painted out when hostilities started? I would assume they would not want to leave these in place during wartime, but I haven't been able to find any info on it. I thought one of you would probably know. Thanks!
