I am toying with the idea of running a WWII Med campaign. I want to limit the scope of the campaign to the ships in Gibraltar and the Italian navy starting in 1940. The Italians are pretty easy but the British OB seemed to change about every three months. If someone has the OB info for the entire med, I would appreciate their help.
I plan to limit the ships available by having (15)% of available ships in refitting, maintenance, ect... Sound reasonable?
I also plan to limit the amount of fuel oil available so both sides can't sail every ship, every three-day strategic turn. I realize that fuel usage depends on the age, size, speed of the ship as well as a million other variables. I am looking for average historic fuel uses. My thought is to have x amount of oil units available with a small reserve each month and the players have to allocate the usage. They will have missions to assign from escort, bombardment, intercept, covering, patrol, etc....
I am thinking something along the lines of DD's use one fuel unit, new CL's three units, old (pre-1930) CL's use four units, new CA's eight units, old CA's use twelve units, new BC's eighteen units, old BC's use twenty one units, new BB's use twenty seven units and old BB's use thirty-three units. Modernized ships would be treated as "new".
Given this scale, I can look at the actual missions in the med and kind of plot out deliveries of oil to Gibraltar and from the Germans.
I know my players will ask so I would like to have some historical data to back up oil usages. I would appreciate your ideas, thoughts and data. Thank you.
