Howdy,
I was going to order a hotz works deep space mat (6x4) with 1.5" hex's however as i live in the uk the cost of shipping combined with a customs hit makes it a bit of an expensive option.
My other option is going with a star fleet battles hex map but the hex's are ony 1.25" would this be sufficient? i was thinking of using mostly bergstrom miniatures and i believe most of his bases are 1"?
Cheers
Simon

1.25 would be tight for the miniatures, but I still think it would work.
The Hotz mats are gorgeous though, I have 2 of them. Can't recommend them highly enough and you could get nice, spacious 2" hexes if you wanted.

We play on 30mm/1,25" hexes. Though we play in "fleet scale" so most of our ships are only 2-3 inches long. Only use the smaller hexes due to not having room for a larger playing surface.
Works OK most of the time. But there are moments when the fleets "furball" and then models can intermingle and be hard to arrange.
If you have the room, then I'd go for the larger mat - I have a Hotz one, and it looks great. Just don't have a big enough area to use it in right now. But nthe smaller hexes will work OK most of the time.

Thank's for the info guys, i reckon i can make a better informed decision now.
Im going to go for the hotz mat as i think this will be the the better option.
For some reason i was only thinking in terms of base size rather than the actual size of the miniatures and potential for fuball.

I use a 3" Holtz mat, but then I'm using a mix of ships, mainly Ravenstar which are good size.

Hi Simon,
I'm UK-based (Aberdeen), and am the proud owner of a 1.5" Hex Hotz mat. I justified the expense, having spent what seemed like days stenciling a green hex mat for some 'Bag the Hun' WW2 aerial action. Did not want to repeat the experience! Early days (first game on it last night) 1.5" seem Ok, bit tight when Capital ships go toe to toe, but you do get a larger 'playing area' than with larger hexes.
Cheers! Wilf

PS The Hotz package must have come in under the customs threshold, as there was no duty to pay.

Customs are like a random encounter! Sometimes things pass them by. Sometimes you get hit for duty that makes the whole thing really poor value.
Glad you got smooth transit.
Happy gaming with it!
