Hi guys,
I'm a newcomer in this forum (and in NT as well). I've got the rules last month and I'm now collecting, painting and basing several GHQ navies... anyway, I've some question on basing: does it matter? there is a standard for them? I think that basing my miniatures prevent them to be handled from greasy-hand fat guys directly on the paint work and, moreover, adds a lot of visual effects on the miniature. does the meaurements been taken from the base or from the ship on it? please let me know your view on this point. many thanks Rafael p.s.
just to introduce my self, I'm located in Italy (and I'm italian) and I'm trying to spread these rules in my club as there is some interest in naval wargame.

I use clear acrylic bases from Litko and have always good positive reviews from them whenever they come out to play. As for measuring, I tell my players to measure from the 1st mast to 1st mast. That is usually bridge to bridge, but as long as you are using the same point on each ship it works out fine. With moving, my bases are now at least 6 different sizes but again, it really doesn't matter. We never have problems with moving or measuring shots. The only real problem occurs when we try to figure out the arc of fire, but as GM I usually have last call on that.

Hey Rafael and welcome aboard.
I think for measuring firing the rules say centre of ship to centre of ship, that's what my playing group does anyway.
Bases aren't necessary but they do help. It's easier to move them on the table and protects them a bit from over zealous gamers. As they aren't necessary for the game there is no official base sizing. I've found bases also help with movement as you can slide a based ship along a ruler their move distance and it keeps a straight line.

No standard for bases.....I have had several occassions where bases end up overlapping at close range. I just would not make them any larger than they need to be. For 1/2400 models my standard size is 1"x3" or smaller. I uses flat/thin bases so the overlapping is not an issue if it comes to that.

Hi Rafael,
I use bases on mine, it helps protect them in transit and from gamers!!
It may mean your base is in contrast to your sea but clear plastic or litko can solve this. Bases also mean you can paint wakes on the base and add ship names to them.
Benefits outweigh any disadvantages.

You painted those bad boys, so why let someone handle the paint job? A base is great for this.
