I attended Rock CON this weekend in Rockford,IL. I was only able to make it Friday Evening due to family commitments. Linked up with some new game friends I met a couple weeks ago at NACON. Special thanks again to Battlefield Hobbies for hosting the Naval Thunder "battle of Cape Spartivento" Italy Vs UK. In addition to playing I was able to make it around a get a few picks of some of he other great gaming events that were going on including FoW, several fanatsy venues and a very unique home brew game called Queen Anne's war (Pirates in 28mm) with some of the best homemade terrian I ahve seen. Battle o Facilities: Cape Spartvento-Ended in a draw after UL drew early blood taking down 4 Itallian cruisers and eventually a IT BB. The Itallian BB fire was overwhelmig and badly mauled the HMS Renown and HMS Ramillies(Very outmatched). Flames of War: Old West Game: Queen Anne's War (28mm Pirates): Next year I will make sure I have this event on the calendar so hopefully I can make it longer. The little I saw seemd very well organized and the facilities were great.

In the NT game, what did the white smoke vs. the black smoke represent?

In the NT game, what did the white smoke vs. the black smoke represent? They were the two colors of smoke since smoke only lasts two turns you would lay down a string of white and black. At the end of the turn pick up the black and end of the next turn pick up the white. It worked pretty well.

I had an idea that was might be what they were doing with the two different colors. Thanks for confirming it. The pirate game looked like fun with the traditional garb.

Those buildings in the "Old West" game were from "Whitewash City". They are .pdf files that you download; and once you have them you can print as many as you want. I've got a lot of them and they aren't all that hard to construct either. Nice products! www.erichotz.com/whitewash.htmlThe designer is Eric Hotz (of Larry Leadhead fame) . . . and he also has a lot of Roman galleys that you can download and build too: www.romanseas.com/So, if any of you are interested in 1/300 scale Galley Warfare, you can build fleets (and cities) fairly inexpensively. However I do believe that his version of galley rules have received less-thsn-glowing reviews . . . so you might want to use your own favorite rules . . . or maybe Harry will want to write some . . . but NOT until he's finished "NT: RISE OF THE BATTLESHIP II". -- Jeff

I tried to play the galley rules at Historicon a couple of years back and felt it was way to slow. In fairness, he was teaching the rules to a group of six or eight, so it may move quicker once you get to know know to play, but still, this is an era I have always loved, in fact I wrote some rules a long while back...wonder where they might be...um

In the galley rules, what weapons did they have available besides ramming and boarding? or did this include latter history when galleys were armed with cannons?

shigure, The paper models are from the "Roman" period, and although they go relatively late, it is pre-cannon. That being said, the ships are really neat as a look through the online .pdf catalog will show: www.romanseas.com/rs_catalog.pdfNote that it takes a few moments for the .pdf file to load. Anyway, decide for yourself about the ships. -- Jeff

Wow - I grew up in Rockford, and never knew about Rock Con. My parents live less than a mile from the venue. Admittedly I've been away for 20 years now... But I can't help but feel that I missed out....oh for the internets back then! I know I would have enjoyed some naval thunder back then even...

jchen101,
Hmmm, next year you could attend the Con without having to pay for a hotel room . . . lucky you!
