I have been looking a aquiring some Russian and Japanese fleets.
The question is which units to get.
I played a nice scenario at NAVCON (Battle of Ulsan) 4 Japanese Units vs. 3 Russian.
Tsushima and Yellow Sea just seem to big to start out. Additionally I am having a hard time finding one vendor that has all the units (maybe some are not that critical?).
Anyway, if someone has a related scenario or recomendation for units from part of one of the battles to start out with that would be a great help.
My guess is I would never be able to get more than 2-4 players at one time unless attending a Con so the larger battles do not make alot of scense. Doing part of one of these actions may be more realistic if someone thinks they can be divided up.
I prefer to stick with Panzerschiffe 1/2400 as I am using them for my WWI, but I am open to suggestions to fill units that they may not carry.
TIA,

While the full Battle of the Yellow Sea scenario has a lot of interesting aspects, really the only significant combat historically was between the two "battleship" divisions. This would involve six ships on each side (point values in parentheses).
The Russian line consisted of six battleships -- Tsessarevitch (143), Retvizan (134), Poibeda (95), Peresviet (95), Sevastapol (92) and Poltava (92). Note that the Poibeda and Peresviet had 10" main batteries, the rest 12"; all secondary batteries were various numbers of 6" guns.
The Japanese line consisted of four battleships and two heavy cruisers (to replace the Yashima and Hatuse which had been sunk by mines) -- Mikasa (170), Asahi (133), Fuji (101), Shikishima (132), Nisshin (58) and Kasuga (61). Note that while the four BBs had 12" guns, the Kasuga had one 10" and two 8" main guns and the Nisshin had four 8" main guns. Again all secondaries were 6" guns of varying numbers.
If you have four players, simply giving each a three ship division works well . . . with two players, each can handle the whole line . . . OR you can give each a smaller number.
As for the Ulsan scenario, it would work out more evenly if the Russians had one more cruiser.
I hope that this helps.

Thanks...that seems a bit more workable if I can find the models in the same scale.

Panzerschiffe has all of the Yellow Sea ships in 1/2400 . . . and they're well priced (i.e., cheaper than the 1/3000 scale WTJ ships, which are lovel too).

Not really my era but I noticed Viking Forge Miniatures has a pretty extensive range of pre-dreadnought era naval miniatures. Don't know the quality but from the pictures on their site they look to be at least equivalent to Panzerschiffe. May fill in any missing ships.

If you have a Conway's you might be able to at least substitute similar ships from other navies that are listed until all the ships are available.
It seems interest is picking up in that period for naval warfare.

Tsessarevitch seems to be missing. Is it listed under a different name? A quick wiki search tells me that it was based on the BORODINO class. Anyway here is the list. Assuming I can identify the missing ship $40 plus shipping is not bad for 12 ships. Tsessarevitch Retvizan L-321 $4.00 Pobieda A-301 $4.00 Peresviet-A-301 $4.00 Sevastapol L-329 $3.00 Poltava L-329 $3.00 Mikasa L-323 $3.00 Asahi L-323 $3.00 Fuji L-324 $3.00 Shikishima L-330 $3.00 Nisshin L-325 $3.00 Kasuga L-325 $3.00 Any help is greatly appreciated. TIA,

Panzerschiffe's Tsessarevitch is L-322 . . . just a different spelling from the Cyrillic alphabet.

Placed my order today. This will give me a chance to check out the PS Pre-dreads....assuming I will like them as well then battle of Ulsan OoB will be next. Watch out when RotB2 is released. I am definately hooked on the NT surface combat system.

For those of you interested in Imperial Russian Capital ships, there was a book published by V.M. Tomitch. Title: Warships of the Imperial Russian Navy Volume 1 Battleships published 1968 by B.T. Publishers
Covers major units starting from the Ship of the Line Imperator Nikolai I (1857) to the Petropavlovsk (1911) and Imperatritsa Maria (1913) classes of dreadnaughts. Line drawings of all classes with pics and info. on each vessel. Some pics from the Russo-Japanese war. One intereting pic taken during the battle from the IJN cruiser Iwate has a column of escaping steam coming up from the sunken Russian Battleship Kniaz Souvorov. It marks the spot where she sank.
