I am fortunate enough to have a large table to game on . . . 5' x 10' 6" . . . and I'm interested in the Pre-Dreadnought period . . . so I've decided to adjust (for my table only) the movement factors for the Pre-Dread period.
What I am doing is to divide the ships' speeds by 3 instead of 4 . . . but I have chosen to not make any other adjustments.
If I had a smaller table, I'd not do this, but my table is 7,560 square inches in size and movement rates of 3" and 4" for some of the ships I plan on just doesn't do much even before they take damage . . . the 5 and 6 inch Protected Cruisers are slow compared to the room I have . . . and DDs that move 7" would take 18 turns to make it from one end of the table to the other at full speed.
I realize that my adjusted movement rates might cause serious problems if I tried to carry it through to later periods, but I'm planning on sticking with the Pre-Dreadnought period.
Now I'm not advocating this for those with more normal-sized tables . . . but if you have a large playing surface, you might consider it too.

I would suggust making a custom ruler with 1.5 or 2 inches to the inch and using that. Changing the speed calculation will throw off all the other factors by making the ships faster than they should be. Your rate of fire and range will be all off.

Ken That's a great idea, I've done this in reverse where I made rules in which 2/3=1inch to give more room on the table. Since you're not changing the ranges, it should work without any issues.
