Greetings all,
I'm building up my Russo-Japanese fleets with Panzerschiffe ships. Ran into a bit of a stumbling block with a couple of ships in the Japanese 6th Division. Panzerschiffe doesn't have the protected cruisers Akitsushima or Izumi. I was wondering if anyone would know if there were any classes that would be visually similar to either of these that I could use as replacements?

I see that Viking Forge has both cruisers in their line . . . at $5.95 each though (about twice the price of many Panzerschiffe vessels). I don't know what they charge for shipping.

Yeah, I'd heard they've been having some problems lately.
You can try going through the Panzerschiffe catalog. . .
Akitsushima was a 2 funnel cruiser with a twin mount fore and aft. Izumi was a 2 funnel cruiser with a single mount fore and aft.
Just go through and look at the pics of other protected cruisers - even from other countries - and see if you can find ones that match that description.

I lloked around and their stockist don't seem to be carrying their lines anymore.

As both Akitsushima & Izumi were rearmed with 6" main guns before the Russo-Japanese war the IJN Suma class or Austrian L-147 Zenta class may be good stand-ins.

I would not have any problems with stand-in vessels of similar appearance . . . for one thing, the fellows I game with wouldn't know the difference . . . and if they did, they wouldn't care either.
Close counts.

Sometimes you don't have a chioce. I have cut off and added on funnels to ships trying to make them look close. I still am looking for a 1/2400 ship for the Otranto for Coronel. I wouldn't mind one in 1/1200 for that matter.

Thanks all. I ordered a Suma for the Akitsushima and a Naniwa for the Izumi. Now I need to get some stiff, small gauge wire, to make masts

berlichtingen, While I've not bothered with masts myself, take a look at the WTJ site linked below. In the white "Information Links" section, under "Historical Naval Miniatures" the first three links are: Photo Gallery, Predreadnought Paint Guide and Installing Masts: www.wtj.com/store/Both the "Installing Masts" and "Paint Guide" should be of use to you. Personally I'm painting both navies in Pre-War colors . . . to make identification visually much easier . . . but you will make your own choice. I hope that the above link helps. -- Jeff

The Viking Forge website is back up: that's the good news Alas, they don't accept PayPAl or credit cards and cheques or money orders are a no-no. Too bad since they have a few models others don't have. Like Carnarvon and Minotaur for the Falklands or the Emden Chase.

Those Alnavco liners are excessively expensive for 1/2400 ships . . . they are about twice the price of Houston's 1/1000 scale ships. I'd rather use a substitute myselft.

Yeah, I thoght they were 1/1200 at first, I don't need something to fancy for the ship, just something close.
