Guys,
Just wondering what approach you guys take towards the max speed of your ships. Do you use the formula based on the size of the ship or do have a different method?
Personally I think the captial ships should be quite slow, as they certainly seemed ponderously slow in the TV series!
Any thoughts?

Does MvM not have the Optional Rule of Maximum Speed that the Core Rules have on page 78? I dont own it yet.

All rules from the core rulebook are in effect unless stated otherwise. The only one I can thnik of that isn't is the moving map and of course the changes to other rules like Defender, ect. So yes, the speed rule can be used.
We do use the max speed rule, but normally it isn't an issue as Cyborgs try to stay out of gun range and Colonials don't want to get into point blank missile range.

Thanks guys, I can see your point about the speed not really being an issue. I was just bothered by the thought of having to apply the -1 to attack rolls for the effects of "relitivistic distortion". In neither series did I see any ships go particularly fast, never mind approaching light speed!

Well the 'Relativistic Distortion' rule represents .1 lightspeed. . . not c^2. And is an optional rule intended for a different setting in any case. So feel guilt free as you ignore it.

Wait, you cant let a gamer off guilt free! You must follow the mantra! "DO AS WE SAY!!! OR YOU ARE DOOMED!" Oh, wait...you mean this isnt Grandma Wendy? Nevermind. Carry on, guilt free

I use a max speed of 4, even if it doesn't make sense realistically. In the TV shows the fighters and missiles are always zipping around much faster than the capital ships. So for me, on the playing mat, speed 4 for the big ships and speed 8 or 9 for the fighters and missiles works.

I was just thinking about this, as I was modifying my SSD in the Shipyard. I was adding a space for a ship's maximum speed, and came across a Destroyer with a Max Speed of 12 ((10-1 size)+3 Delta). Compare this to an Interceptor's speed of 8, and this means a spacecraft can travel 50% faster than fighters, and twice the speed of bombers.
Yikes? Is this realistic in ANY setting? I dont know, being a newcomer to space gaming and space opera...

Well in some space games there is no max speed for ships, but there is a set speed for fighters. The reason it does come into play so much is you're trying to attack the other side.

Actually, in space it makes more sense for the larger ships to be faster than the smaller ones. There is no atmospheric drag, so assuming you have sufficiently efficient drive systems, there's no reason a larger ship couldn't out-accelerate a smaller one. Changing course might be a different story depending on your drive tech, but in a flat out straight shot it's very likely a battleship could be faster than a fighter I feel.
So, you really just have to play with what feels right.
In any case, a maximum speed of 12 will never really come into play, as you will probably fly right off the map.

Ok, I'm sold! As for flying off the map, a DD with Delta 3 can hit velocity 11 on turn 2, and even without RDF, s shouldn't have much of a problem staying on the board.

Actually, in space it makes more sense for the larger ships to be faster than the smaller ones. Agreed. Larger platforms would permit more goodies to be crammed inside: drives, sensors, weapons, etc. Small strikecraft are "cool," but not particularly realistic... assuming realism is something you're shooting for in a space combat game. I suppose it's really whatever works for you.

And if you want a sci-fi example; I happened to be watching The Empire Strikes Back a couple of days ago, and Imperial Star Destroyers were able to more or less keep up with the Millenium Falcon in open space. SO THERE!!!
