Getting ready to run 1st Guadalcanal and have a question about radar and night battles. With night battles, visibility is limited to 20". But the radar rules make mention of "blind fire". How does that work? Are ships with FC type RDR the only ones to make a cmd check? Played a few WW1 games, but this will be the first WW2 game. Our group really likes the game system and we have some picky people.

because the US have effective radar they are able to fire out to 40" under circumstances where they would otherwise be considered "blind" and unable to fire. So in this instance at night ships with RDR fire control will have a limit of 40" on their fire where as the ships with STD fire control will have a limit of 20". Also remember to use the Japanese night fighting special rule, this helps to balance the Japanese vs Allies with regard to radar.
Hope this answers your query.

Thanks for the reply. Was that in the rules somewhere? I must have really missed that. To follow up: Ships with RDR can fire out to 40" with a passed cmd check. Fail the cmd check, can't fire. Ships with RDR need to pass a cmd check for ALL fire, else FC = STD? No one else need to pass cmd checks? All ships roll? Best ship? I did note all the range modifiers and Japanese bonus for night fights. Sorry for all the questions. I really had no problems with the rules until I got to radar and night fights.

Thanks for the reply. Was that in the rules somewhere? I must have really missed that. Yup. US Nationality Bonus ( Advanced Radar) on p52, Night Battles on p53, and Unreliable Radar on p56. Ships with RDR can fire out to 40" with a passed cmd check. You're mixing and matching several different (optional) rules here. Night Battles limits visibility (and engagement ranges) to 20"... unless a special nationality bonus alters this. Also, range mods are doubled. Advanced Radar allows the American ships with fire control type RDR to engage targets out to 40". Unreliable Radar requires a command check from each ship (relying on RDR) firing its main battery (modified by crew quality). If failed, the ship is treated as having fire control type STD for the remainder of the turn. If a target is no longer engage-able, the declared attack is forfeited.

no worries answering questions, it's what a friendly forum is for.
As fastgit mentioned you are mixing the two different rules Advanced Radar and Unreliable Radar, I think this is where you are getting confused over command rolls. Only ships with unreliable radar need to make a command roll.
