Turn 0: The German and American Destroyers first sight each other (see map). The US fleet was heading north-east, the German fleet was on a south-west heading, both fleets cruising about 12 knots.

Turn 2: Maximum speed can now be attained. The lead elements of each fleet can see each other. The German units continue on course, with the exception of the 1st Division, which begins a long turn to starboard, heading to cut off the Americans. The American destroyers continue on course, but the American battleships turn port to a northerly course.

Turn 5: Both forces continue on their general courses, graduating closing the range.
The Bayern fires on the Texas heavily, causing 20 points damage, knocking out a 14-in. turret, which, in turned caused a fire, which knocked out two 5-in. guns.
The 12th half-flotilla, surprised the Americans in DESRON7 with their 5.9-in. guns, causing heavy damage to the Cummings (3).
The Texas fires on the Bayern, causing minimal damage (3).
The New York fires on the König, the shell penetrated to turret roof, exploding in the powder handling area. This erupted and spread down to the magazine, which ignited. The König disappeared in a tower of fiery smoke.
The Arkansas fired on the German 6th ½ Flotilla, but missed.
Turn 6: After the loss of the König, the first division adjusts its speed to reform a contiguous line. The fleets are generally closing with each other. The American destroyers look for an opportunity to close with the enemy.
Turn 7: The fleets continue to close.
The Bayern hit the Texas, knocking out a 14-in. turret, and starting a small fire, which was quickly put out.(7)
Her 5.9-in. batteries fires on the DESRON7, but missed.
The Kaiser hit the New York twice, but her shells failed to penetrate the American armour, so it only caused minor damage (6).
The Grosser Kurfürst fires on the Arkansas, but the result was the same as before, two hits, minor damage (6).
In a similar manner, when the Markgraf fired on the Wyoming, two hits were obtained, but these failed to penetrate. (6)
The Kronprinz Wilhelm fired at the Florida, but missed.
The ships of the 6th half-flotilla fire on DESRON8, but missed.
The Texas fires on the Bayern, knocking out a 5.9-in. casement, this started a fire, but this was quickly contained. (1).
The New York hit Kaiser hard with four hits, one knocking a main turret along with other damage. (16)
The Arkansas hit the Grosser Kurfürst three times, with minimal effect. (6)
The Wyoming fires on the Markgraf, but failed to penetrate. (3)
The Florida fired on the Grosser Kurfürst twice, but these shells also failed to penetrate. (6)
The Delaware fires on the 6th half-flotilla, but fails to hit anything.
The ships of DESRON 8 fire at the 6th half-flotilla, sinking S113 (4) and damaging V116 (1).
Turn 8: The German 12th Half-Flotilla makes a port turn, trying to get around the American destroyers. The rest of the fleets continue on their previous courses.
The Bayern fires on the Texas, hitting her twice, and knocking out a 5-in. gun.(10)

Turn 9: The German 12th Half-Flotilla turn to a southern course. The Texas begins to swing to the port, withdrawing out of the line due to damage.

The German 6th half flotilla mixes it up with DESRON7, sinking the Nicholson, Cushing and Allen.
Turn 11: The Germans are turning away.

The Kaiser fires at the New York, hits three times. (9)
The Grosser Kurfürst hits the Wyoming twice, knocking out a 5-in. gun and starting a fire, which was contained. (15)
The Markgraf scored a hit on the Florida, knocking out a 12-in. turret. (6)
The Kronprinz Wilhelm fires on the Delaware, the first time this battle she is fired on by a German battleship, and makes up for it. Two hits, both penetrating, one causing fire and the other flooding. Both are contained. (18)
The New York smashed the Bayern with four hits, one of which knocked her port engine room out, reducing speed to 15 knots. (16)
The Arkansas hit the Kaiser twice, with minor effects. (6)
