If you are not familiar with the Author, James Hornfischer I encourage you to read all of his books including Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors about the Battle of Samar. His Latest offering Neptune's Inferno just came out this year. I aquired it several weeks ago on my nook when I first discovered it. I did not start reading right away as I was in the midst of The Pacific I finally found some time and I started reading it this past weekend and with only 120+ pages complete I will already say it out does any of his previous works. Just finished the Battle of Savo Island and it is and excellent work that I find hard to put down. The book will eventually cover all the actions around Guadalcanal and based off the coverage of Savo Island I cannot wait to read the rest. I already have several ideas on how to improve the Naval Thnder Savo Island scenario. Do yourself a favor and make room for this book in your library. www.amazon.com/Neptunes-Inferno-U-S-Navy-Guadalcanal/dp/055380670X

Good to hear... I read -- and thoroughly enjoyed -- The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors. Hornfischer has an engaging style that makes his books easy reads. Well-referenced, too.
I concur with afilter.

I agree, Neptune's Inferno was great. I've even been using it as a reference as I acquire all the ships for the battles around Guadalcanal. The book has an Order of Battle listing and a map for each of the five battles (Savo Island, Cape Esperance, Cruiser Night Action, Battleship Night Action, and Tassafaronga).
Hornfischer has written three books that cover Pacific naval battles. Neptune's Inferno is the most recent. I just finished Ship of Ghosts, which follows the USS Houtson in the naval battles early in the war around the Java Sea. I just picked up The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors, so that's next on my list.
I'd like to know what he's working on next.

I started reading Neptune's Inferno at Barnes & Noble one day. Seemed pretty good. Will have to go back and read it at some point. My reading schedule is a little full right now, so I'll just have to put it on the backlog.

Tin Can Sailors was excellent and set a new standard Ship of Ghost good, but not as good. So Far I would rate Neptune's Inferno even better than Tin can Sailors.
