Hello all, new here. UK based, and have just raided the wargamevault for CoD and RotB. Looking to invest in the Russo-Jap navies. Firstly, the rules look straight forward enough, just one question so far about torps on the data sheet. Is the bracketed number on the end of the lines, the attacks in each arc per turn or are they per game? I suspect per game but not sure! Secondly, i am looking at either GHQ or PZ in 1/2400. Can anyone give a physical size (actual model size) for an average ship in this scale? If i can scoop a lottery win in the meantime then it will be Old Glory 1/600!!! GHQ is easier for me to obtain in the UK, but i do like the charm of the PZ models. Anyway thats all for now Greg

Welcome, it is per game and the GHQ tend to have more detail, but Pz is a better buy for the money and a bit easier to paint. As for size...GHQ Bismarck is about 4 inches/110mm long. I'll leave the rest to those who play NT a bit more than me. Hope that helps.

Thankyou Larry. I like the PZ, ordering from the US is the only hassle with those, but i can live with it.
I am guessing that the Bismark is bigger than 1904-05 ships?

Welcome, GHQ are nice, but is you are looking to do Russo-Japanese war you will not find mnay models avail;able. My experivence is that Panzerschiffe is the best source for the Pre-dreads. Now for WWI-WWII capital ships I do use mostly GHQ as The PS models lack the detail in superstructure and masts I desire. For WWII I currently use WoTC War at Sea since I already owned a large collection before I discovered NT. If you check out the modeling section you will see most of my fleets. With the exception of some of the very small Spanish American War ships and a few of the larger WWI BC all my bases at 3" so you will have a good idea on the actaul size of the 1/2400 model. Here is my Tsushima fleets: www.steeldreadnought.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=painting&action=display&thread=472Have Fun, Aaron

Hi, the RJW capitol ships are all around 2" long (give or take). I should also note that Aaron (above) has added masts to his Panzerschiffe models, they do not come with masts . . . but I also think that they are excellent gaming models. They have enough details without going overboard. I prefer them myself they are an excellent value for the price: www.panzerschiffe.com/Catalog.htmlBy the way, I also use 1" wide by 3" long bases . . . although mine are 1/4" thick so that I can put labels on the sides: -- Jeff

Yes, Jeff is correct on all counts. I did modify my models with masts (how to in modeling forum). Either way PS is the best value and has the widest selection of 1/2400 pre-dreadships IMO? PS has all the models ready available for Russo Japanese war. I currently have the complete OoB for both Yello Sea, Tsushima, and Ulsan and have playec them all using the NT RotB rules.

Yes, the Houston Ships (from Great Endeavors) are considerably larger . . . and you would need a large table for them. As I recall, typical Pre-Dreadnought battleships are in the 5-6" range in length and the USS Pennsylvania (an armored cruiser) is about 8" long.
That being said, they are good values for the money ($12.50 unpainted is their top price, I believe). One still needs quite a large table for them . . . and if you are going to use them on the floor, then the 1/600 Old Glory ships would probably be better.

not really, we did a fight a few weeks ago on just a 4x4 table with about 6 ships ob each size. there is a rule in the one section for dealing with the scale. it worked out quite well for the game since we dont have access to large tables at times. you wont fight a huge fleet battle at that scale on a very small tabler though. at nav-con they did 1000 scale in 1-1 inch on a pair of 3x6 table sibe by side with no issuse.

The larger ships have issues with turning. We found that a 7 inch long ship can take itself out of range on a regular size table using the set ranges just by turning. One house rule that helped was turning from the middle instead of the back. The best bet is to use a bigger table and the longer ranges.

I love the houston ships, and have played 4 times with them now at cons thanks to Dave Himm. Doubling ranges and movement is almost a requirement IMO. 1/2400 works perfect for my 8'x4' table. Tushima just fits ad works well.

Thanks for all the replies in this topic. I have been playing out some fights on paper and today picked up a few GHQ 1/2400 Battleships (WW1).
Will see if my paintbrush can do them some justice now!! Will probably end up with GHQ for WW1 and PS for Russo-Jap.

Hey Greg, how's the ships coming along? we're considering the same issues here, including GHQ WWI (lovely details) or doing Russo-Japanese by Panzerschiffeor Houston. I read the mast article and think it's not to dificult to attempt. At the moment, we're using Panzershiffe for WWII USN/IJN in the Guadalcanal campaign. The ships have charm, but part of me longs for more detail!

Hey Aman,
Well to me the PS ships are just perfect. I am no master painter and and those PS ships are just a beauty to paint, for me. The ships also have a charm of their own, i like old school stuff (spencer smiths etc) and these just echo that.
I do have a couple of ghq ww1 battleships and the detail level is impressively crazy. But, for my needs and taste it will be PS all the way. Hope this is of some use.
