Yesterday I ran my first convention game of Naval Thunder. Here's the link to it from my gaming group's blog. chicagoskirmish.blogspot.com/2011/11/naval-thunder-at-rock-con.htmlAll the players got the hang of it fairly quickly but torpedoes seemed to be somewhat of an issue. One player who got hit by six spreads of torpedoes wasn't very happy with how they worked and the American battleship player thought they were too simplified as a direct fire weapon. But he was used to playing more involved naval games. Despite that, all the players had fun with the game and I saw several writing the name down so they could buy it later.

I really wanted to make to Rock-con, but company travel prevented it. Your scenario was a little different from others we have seen, but the island bombardment made for a nice change of pace. How did you figure the bombardment to be effective at hitting the assigned targets? Thanks for the AAR and pics. Sounds like all the players had a good time. At least the three turns before any action gave them some experience in moving their ships.

For the island I divided it up into 12 sections and gave each one a name. Then, whenever it got hit I would roll a D12 to see what got hit. The island itself was a 5+ to hit. If something got hit twice by a battleship it died. The cruisers who never shot at the island would have needed to hit more times to blow anything up. I'll probably modify how the island works when I run the scenario again.
I have also come to the conclusion that I am the only 1/3000 scale gamer in the Midwest. I have yet to see another person with that scale at a convention.

I like the island rules as they seem simple and fast, just what you want at a con. The three hits knocking out the main guns is just an odd thing that happens sometimes. Nice write-up, looked easy and fast to play, great job! Maybe we could talk Dread into sponsoring a group to run games? What would we call it/them???

I had planned to attend Rock Con but real world considerations got in the way. Congratulations on your first convention game of NT. Hope there are more to come.

I had a lot of fun running it and am already planning several other games to run, both at conventions and just for my gaming group. While I like running historical games, my miniatures selection tends toward the bizarre. I have most of the Washington Naval Treaty ships in my collection as well as some of the WWII German ships that never got built, like the H39. I also have an H42 and an H44, which is absolutely massive.
For the game I almost ran at Navcon, an Amagi BC was going to make an appearance. I might try running the last big battle in Hector Bywater's book where a Tosa and Amagi join the Japanese line of battle. That could be a really interesting fight using CoD rules instead of Battleship Row.
