I'm planning on introducing Colonial Battlefleet to my local gaming group and trying to figure out how many ships and people I should fit into one game. I don't want everyone to get into the game quickly and don't want to get bogged down. Does anyone who has tried this before have any thoughts?

For generic ships, keep it simple. Maybe a BC and a couple of CAs per player. I have run intro BSG games successfully with 1 battlestar or base ship per player. More important than the ships is to keep the game within a manageable size. No more than 6 players. Start each player an equal distance from the center of the map, far enough out so the first turn should be primarily learning the movement and game turn mechanics, but close enough to start shooting by turn 2 or 3. Consider running a 2-3 turn training game with 1 ship each, followed by the main game. If you have a lot of interest, be prepared to run a 2d game.

Leave the fighters and missiles at home for the first few games.
