So now that I've moved my local library has Lost Fleet (hurrah) and I've reached book 3 and am of course trying to design the ships. Hell lances look like disruptor's, the null field could be antimatter torps (or plasma bolts when Empire space is out) and grapeshot and missiles are self explanatory. The issue is the bombardment weapons (Big Rocks or BFR's to the marines) they fit the description of rail guns in planetary bombardment mode but have no anti ship ability, should they be a lighter railgun (to represent the savings in all the targeting systems they don't need) or should they be an equipment option?

Never mind I've figured it out. Just call the rail gun a large Hell Lance and treat the planetry bombardment ability as a seperate weapon that you can't use at the same time due to targeting systems interference or some such PSB.
