Just wondering how many own WoTC War at Sea and are now using their models for NT? I thought it was very clever to include the 1/1800 scale in the intro of NT since WoTC is the only company producing that scale that I am aware of. If you are not aware there is entire fan based forum devoted to WoTC AAM(WWII land game) and War at Sea called the foruMINI. aaminis.myfastforum.org/index.phpNaval thunder is also a regular topic of discussion in the WaS forum as well as the general wargaming section. I plan to use my WoTC models for NT WWII games just wondering if anyone else has made the transistion. WaS is nice for a beer and preztels game and to break people into naval gaming, but NT offers so much more when you are ready.

Yeah, the "good for 1/1800 scale" was a deliberate nod to the WaS crowd. Will check out that forum!

I've been playing WaS off and on from the start. I wouldn't have picked up NT if I hadn't had the huge collection of painted WWII ships. If only WotC would do a WWI set... Yes, WaS, has been deliberately designed to make it easy to play at the cost of historical accuracies. Its pretty amazing for what it is, and things like the Air phase are really fun. What's not so fun is just straight up surface battles. But since NT excels at that, I can now rest at night

Yep, that's how I found my way here too - WAS is a great game for what it is, but it does fall flat in a few areas. I'm looking for a game that I can use my minis with, but isn't to complex.

My experience is you found it. Additionall, do not be afraid to expolre other time periods. I am also enjoying WWI and Russo-Japanese and learning alot more history.

I have not been around much the last couple days as I was distracted with another Naval Game, War at Sea. In addition to being the 69th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor 7 Dec 2010 was also the release day for the latest WaS set "V" of new ships. Being so close the X-mas and my Birthday I only ordered one case of minis in advance. I did very well on my pulls (Random colloectible mini game) and now have all but 4 of the 39 units released in this Set. A case on minis includes 12 boosters with 5 units in each booster. These are the 60 units I received in my case. Fortunately no duplicates on the "rare" units. I think I have been a good boy, so hopefully Santa will bring me some more as I like to get multiples of some units as well collect the entire set. These are also the ships I am using to play Naval Thunder Battleship Row and how I discovered NT to begin with. My current WaS fleets include over 850 units(Ships/Planes), so it was kind of hard to justify using anything else for playing WWII NT. I promise I will get back to painiting/re-doing masts on my Pre-dread fleet soon as well as naggig Harry about the release of ROTB II.

The deck painting on the CV IJN Kaga is very impressive from the photo. It looks like whoever is putting out the models is spending some time researching color schemes. What is the BB behind the Kaga, a Russian BB?

The deck painting on the CV IJN Kaga is very impressive from the photo. It looks like whoever is putting out the models is spending some time researching color schemes. What is the BB behind the Kaga, a Russian BB? Yes, they put out a very good product for the price IMO....it is amazing what experienced painters/modelers do with these ships modifying them and re-painting as well. The biggest appeal is that they are playable right out of the box and you get 5 units for less than the cost of a single GHQ capital ship. Not nearly the detail as GHQ and they are 1/1800 scale, but they definately have a strong following with both historical gamers and new gamers alike. The BB is the soviet Sovyetskiy Soyuz...the German BB in the back is the H-39 (Friedrich der Grosse). These two very contraversial units in this set as they were never completed in reality. Some are very happy that like to play What if scenarios while other are very opposed to thier inclusion. The game designer is trying to walk a fine line between historical gamers and the pure gamers that War at Sea is the only Naval game they have ever played. Overall he is doing a fine job as this is now Set V. When they released set 1 back in the spring of 2007 they expected it to be a stand alone game with no further expansions. The game is produced by Wizards of the coast that took over the old Avalon Hill product line several years ago when Hasbro bought them. Wizards specialize more in the fantasy realm with D&D, Magic the Gathering and until recently Star Wars. This and the Land Game (Axis And Allies Minis) along with the Axis and Allies Board games are the only historical games they produce. Some speculate they are forced to and would rather have nothing to do with it. The problem is the products have such a strong following they cannot give it up or at least Hasbro will not let them. They have a few devoted staff like the designer of War at Sea that keep these products going.

So is there a site that shows all the ships produced? Do you know if there are plans to do more, say a Midway set or something along that line?

Unfortunately they have been not kept their gallery up to date. You can see the first 2 two sets here. www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=ah/aam/galleryThey do not do battle sets as it is a collectible Mini game. Currently with what is out you could easily do Midway. The only ship that is missing is Hiryu (probably in the next set) as Kaga was in this one. Here is a entire forum devoted to bothe the land and Naval game...lots of great pics of re-paints and custom models in the Modeling 101 section. aaminis.myfastforum.org/index.php

Thanks to afilter's announcement on another forum about Wargame Vault's 20% off sale, I just bought Naval Thunder today and joined this message board. To date, War at Sea is the only naval wargame I've played. I have a decent-sized collection of WAS minis and I find the quick battles, fleet-building and "tournament" style of play fun, but I've been looking for a rule set with more bite for awhile now - something that I can use to recreate historical engagements. After researching the various options I settled on Naval Thunder. Reading through the rulebook, I'm not disappointed. If anyone is interested in a list of all the WAS models produced (not counting the newest expansion that was released on 12/7/2010), here is an online database sorted by nation: was.tamgc.net/

Afilter - I came over to NT from W@S based on your strong recommendation (no pressure)on Forumini. I'm just getting familiar with the system & hope to play with my son over Christmas. Know of any good 'starter' scenarios?

Know of any good 'starter' scenarios? Gald to see you and a few others are taking my "strong" suggestion. River Platte and Denmark Straight are both excellent starter scenarios IMO. I think we have played River Platte about 4 times and still enjoy it for a fast under an hour game. Both are available in the Bitter Rivals expansion and your WaS ships will work great.

Afilter, you convinced myself and Nisk as well, sir. I actually purchased the NT rules several months ago but didn't make a big effort to use them until I read your recommendation on them. Now I'm hooked. I like WaS for what it is and enjoy introducing new players to Naval Tabletop with it but, it leaves a lot of "holes" for those of us that have a deeper interest in naval history and tactics.
