Anyone use them.
When playing last weekend there was some friendly discussion about how players have used various methods of passing information to other players instead of just table talk. One was to write a 5 word message.
I just read this on another forum:
Having some pre-printed signals made up for each fleet and then each ship rolling a command rating to determine if they see the signal sounds like an intersting way to add some realism to the game.
When the fleet/squadron flag has a new order for his fleet each ship performs a command roll if they make it the GM shows them the signal and then it would be up to them to decode it properly using a key. Same thing could be done on a simpler scale with just passing short messages 5 words or less.
I think this would be pertinent for CoD and RotB and even early WWII before TBS was wide spread. I was just reading an account of the USS Houston where they had to take commands from the Dutch via signal flags at Java and it caused confusion.
Thoughts?

Thanks for all the responses so far. Hi Aaron I'm the one who made all the spreadsheets for Harry, so i might be a little bit biased! Basicly, if you liked the way NT worked and you like spaceships and ship to ship (or fleet to fleet) combat, then CB is for you, and the price is right! Ken Yes, like NT the rules do not see very expensive, but I have been a gamer long enough to know the rules are only a small part of it. So what kind of harware is required? I see hex maps, so I assume some sort of map investment, ships, dice...anything else(special stands, tools etc)? With NT I already had an assortment of ships, so I just needed d10s and tape measures. Just wondering what kind of min investment for someone who has no background in space combat games to have a decent playing experience. Are there preferred ships/products for this game?

OK, now you have my attention (told you I was visual). So any theme will do? Star Trek, Battle Star Galactica, Star Wars and others? So the Star wars space ship minis from WoTC could be recycled with this system?

(ever had a pair of brothers arguing over whether one of them made a legal move or not, definitely a game stopper). LOL...I have two boys(13 and 14) we implemented mandatory dice towers some time ago so everyone were "rolling" the dice. If you haven't already check out some of the what game should I play threads over on the Starship Combat News message board. Ad Astra in particular does a very good job of comparing salient points between a wide range of games. I was a Full Thrust player for 16 years and I'm very happy with the change I've made to CB. Links would be much appreciated as I mentioned I am not much of a fantasy/sci-fi player, so kind of unfamiliar with some of the termanology. Continue to sell me..... If anyone has an AAR with pics that would be great.

I am curious about CB, but I am a visual sort of guy who does mostly historical gaming. Anyone have pics to share? Attended RockCON this past weekend and saw a vendor had some beautiful Battlestar gallactica minis. As I lurk around this side of the board am I correct that CB can be played with these or any ships? Can someone give me the sales pitch as to why I would want to try this over NT or other games. Checked out the wargame vault and the description is not very detailed. I do have 3 children ages 11-14 and always looking for non video game type gaming opportunities with them. TIA,

If a weapon cannot possibly penetrate the armour, it does no damage. However you can still roll for a chance to do a super structure critical - if you get the 10 then you get the super structure crit but again no damage. OK, that makes sense. So in essence you roll to hit. If you get a hit, but no chance to penetrate so still roll and if a 10 then superstructure crit results. Opponent then rolls 1d10 on crit result table and that is the only damage that results. That makes more sense. Thanks,

Last night a good friend came over(Bill) and we gave the new fleets a test run along with my eldset son. My son took command of the Russian fleet and Bill and I divided the IJN command. Neither my son or Bill had played NT yet, so it was a learning experience for all. We developed our strategy to cut off the Russian fleet and sailed out to meet them. Early on we decided to spilt out forces in hopes that the Russians would take the shortest route possible to make it to the objective. Unfortunately the Russian fire was deadly and scored multiple critical hits on the Battleship Fuji igniting the magazine BOOM! The Japanese line then raked the oncoming Russian battle line scoring a hit on every ship and causing the Pobieda to drop out of formation. Unfortunately the action ended when Mom called for my son to go to bed. The Russians had scored a lucky critical, but the Japanese fleet was still very potent. The Russians flag ship was barely afloat and two others were heavily damaged. Overall we really enjoyed the simplicity of the of the pre-dreadnaught action. Close the range, manuever for advantage and slug it out. Look forward to adding more units to this action in the future. Best part is my son now knows how to play and seemed to enjoy the action, so I have a future opponent.

Whle we are on the topic of damage I have a question regarding superstructure criticals, do they cause any damage before the critical is rolled.
For example I fire secondaries and score a hit. Full damge is 2. I roll a 8 for penetration does it do 1 pt of Damage? I roll a 10 does it do 2pts before my opponent rolls 1d10 for superstructure critical.
Sorry if this is covered elsewhere the rules were just unclear other than the player rolls a 1d10.
TIA,

All,
The painted USN Ships are now officially gone. The remainder will go on E-Bay in a few days unless someone else makes an offer before then.
I will post a link once that happens.
Thanks,

Jeff, Thanks, I think we are both doing the samething. I am just trying to build by scenario vs. complete OoB as Col Campbell did. Next I am going to put togehter the rest of the Yellow Sea scenario ships less the 12 capital ships I already have.

This is the next scenario on my list to build. Has anyone actually done a scenario for this battle? Just wondering on the set up. These are the forces I am planning to aquire with the PS reference numbers: Russian: Rossia A-302 $4.00 Gromoboi A-302 $4.00 Rurik A-307 $4.00 Japanese: Idzumo L-332 $3.00 Adzuma L-332 $3.00 Tokiwa L-331 $3.00 Iwate L-332 $3.00 Spelling in Wiki vs. the PS ship lists differ on some of them, so I want to make sure I have the correct models. I just found the link for Col Campbell's blog(great resourceBTW) and it seems to support that I have the correct ships. colcampbell-shipyard.blogspot.com/2010/10/japanese-battle-fleet.htmlAnyone know about the spellings? PS adds a "d" to Azuma and Izumo TIA,

In the NT game, what did the white smoke vs. the black smoke represent? They were the two colors of smoke since smoke only lasts two turns you would lay down a string of white and black. At the end of the turn pick up the black and end of the next turn pick up the white. It worked pretty well.

I attended Rock CON this weekend in Rockford,IL. I was only able to make it Friday Evening due to family commitments. Linked up with some new game friends I met a couple weeks ago at NACON. Special thanks again to Battlefield Hobbies for hosting the Naval Thunder "battle of Cape Spartivento" Italy Vs UK. In addition to playing I was able to make it around a get a few picks of some of he other great gaming events that were going on including FoW, several fanatsy venues and a very unique home brew game called Queen Anne's war (Pirates in 28mm) with some of the best homemade terrian I ahve seen. Battle o Facilities: Cape Spartvento-Ended in a draw after UL drew early blood taking down 4 Itallian cruisers and eventually a IT BB. The Itallian BB fire was overwhelmig and badly mauled the HMS Renown and HMS Ramillies(Very outmatched). Flames of War: Old West Game: Queen Anne's War (28mm Pirates): Next year I will make sure I have this event on the calendar so hopefully I can make it longer. The little I saw seemd very well organized and the facilities were great.

I made it to Rock Con last night. I was able to pick up some RJW used ships someone bought at NAV Con and realized they were the wrong scale. So he passed them on to me. They are a combination of Viking Forge and PS. Today my Panzerschiffe order arrived, so it was time to get painting my Yellow Sea fleets. I decided to use some of the Viking Forge models. They were previously poorly painted, so it took awhile to clean them up. I also decided to add custom masts after seeing how nice the 1/1000 Houston models looked. I could not get all the croos members at 1/2400, but I think I captured the look. They were very easy, but time consuming. Imperial Russian Navy Battleship Division: Tsesarevich (Viking Forge): Retvizian (Panzerschiffe): Pobieda(Viking forge): Peresviet(Viking Forge): Sevastopol(Panzerschiffe): Poltava(Panzerschiffe): Next up are the Japanese which are now drying.

Yep, that's how I found my way here too - WAS is a great game for what it is, but it does fall flat in a few areas. I'm looking for a game that I can use my minis with, but isn't to complex. My experience is you found it. Additionall, do not be afraid to expolre other time periods. I am also enjoying WWI and Russo-Japanese and learning alot more history.

Aaron, just wanted to compliment you on the pic of the battleships - I'm sorry, I can't help you out, I have my 1/6000th fleet still under construction, and don't need any more (except maybe some Italian light cruisers and a few French ships) - they look like a real labour of love! Good luck with the sale! Thanks, when I am in the mood I do enjoy painting up ships.

I know some already do this, but wondering if anyone here has used Avalance Press Naval Games (GWAS or SWWAS) for a campaign. www.avalanchepress.com/I currently own most of the GWAS games that are currently in print and am slowly aquiring many of the SWWAS titles. The concept is you use the AP strategic maps and movement rules to manuever your fleets on the strategic maps. When you have a meeting engagement the tactical battle would then be fought out using NT. With a GM you could even run it as a double blind with only fleets you have discoved being on the map. Here is an example of some of the AP Strategic maps: MED: Pacific Crossroads: Coral Sea: Anyone currently doing this or have thoughts to share?
